Excellent piece. Thanks BGrandath!

And exciting, because I haven't read Serpent's Reach or Angel with the Sword. Yet.

Should we come up with a gift to commemorate the occasion? :cuppa
Should we make a push for donations to help defray the costs of attending and such? I don't know how much the Nebula committee pays for. There might be subtle expenses such as a house/cat sitter because I don't believe Palmer House allows pets. Even if CJ and Jane can do this inexpensively by driving themselves, there are still considerations such as meals, fancy duds for the awards, etc.

Yes Ready. Happy to contribute since I can't get there myself.

Is there a cunning plan to get Her a Hugo nom for next year? Eldest Daughter and I are planning to attend Worldcon in Helsinki.

You know, what I liked about that stream of recommendations is that it demonstrates the incredible and I think completely unduplicated by any other writer diverse nature of the Cherryh oeuvre . So many people rave about her work but there is no one book that is commonly regarded as the best, or the favorite or the best starting point for a new reader. Those folks in that link sound like us here.

I've already gone to Closed Circle and made a cash gift to defray costs, and CJC sent a personal thanks via email. I think that's the biggest help we can provide, and much appreciated as the hotel is quite ritzy, and it would be a treat for them to stay there.

Pardon if this sounds crass, but it boggles my mind to reckon with the fact that producing that incredible ouvre, dozens of wonderful books, has not resulted in financial freedom. I get that these are not on the Best Seller lists, but you'd think by sheer numbers.....sheesh

#%@$& Publishing industry!

Starexplorer, I like Serpent's Reach quite a lot, but Angel with a Sword was created as part of a shared world project, and is not one of her better ones.

I donated a sum at Closed Circle last week but was wondering if we (as a group) wanted to donate. I personally think it would be better to individually donate on Closed Circle but just wanted to make sure there wasn't anyone who couldn't donate there for whatever reason. If anyone is having problems or wants to remain anonymous to CJ let me know and we will work out a means.

Now, I quite liked Angel With a sword. The personalities and the loyalties I found compelling, and if you read only the CJC contributions to the shared world sequels you never lose sight of the genius.

I liked Angel with a Sword as well as the world was well thought out and the characters very believable. But I have never read the related stories. They were difficult to find, but if you know a source I'd be interested in following up.

82Eri, I got mine many many years ago and no longer remember whether they came from a bricks and mortar bookstore. I suspect so given their age. eBay might be a resource at this point? I don't think the other writers compare favorably to CJC's parts, which is why this series was probably not so successful. But it is interesting to read them together. You really do see why she is so much better.
I have been thinking about why I liked AWAS so much. I think it is because like so many of CJC's works, it is profoundly driven by character. Thomas is a deeply cynical person, a former idealist who has lost all convictions in the political path he used to believe passionately in, and he comes up hard against Jones, an innocent and deeply loyal individual. So we learn he is not in fact entirely cynical. In fact he is a person who, at his heart's core, profoundly needs to believe in a cause, and when he is bereft of his politics he substitutes Jones as the thing he can believe it. After reading the book many times I still derive emotional satisfaction from it.

She excells at many things which is why so many different people esteem her work so highly. For me what sticks with me the most are the moments where essential character is shown. Like that Chanur moment when Py does the morse code thing with Jik when he is in the hands of the kif, telling him to trust her and he does.

How does one find Closed Circle? (Sorry to be so dim.) I'd like to contribute to the cause. Thanks for any info.

I absolutely adore Ms. Cherryh's work, having stumbled onto the Faded Sun trilogy by happenstance in the late '70s and being forever after hooked on her byline, and I think her receiving this well-deserved recognition is, well, awesome.
