Banich gave him *a* gun, but Tabini gave him the one with which Bren shot the intruder. So if we're talking about where all it all started, as this passage in Tracker is, that would be the gun Tabini gave him.

I thought that Cajeri was feeling protective (possesive?) of Irene after her escape and role in saving the boys.

Interesting and scandalous :salad:

Finally got my turn at the library's copy! Finished reading last night.

It was also mentioned in one of the books that she was a black girl. That was lost as well.

Chapter 3: "Irene was very, very smart, smarter than any of them, he [Cajeiri] suspected. She was certainly the best at languages, and she was, of all of them, a little scary. ... She was a little unlike the others. Her skin was brown. Her eyes were dark. Her frown was like a sky clouding over."

What Cajeiri classifies as "brown" skin could include some dark shades, since any human skin tone would still be paler than atevi.

I, too, can imagine Irene as a future paidhi!

I am, however (as always) bothered by continuity glitches

The one that got me was that Bren suddenly and inexplicably shifts from wondering/guessing/hoping who is on the Mospheiran shuttle, to confidently and in detail telling Ogun and Tillington about the policies that will be implemented by the replacement stationmaster who is arriving. (While at that point he could have been bluffing, this is Bren, and if he were bluffing from extrapolated information, he would have angsted about it for several pages. So we conclude that he, somehow, really does know this information.)

--

Yes, Irene's mom! She remains a future plot point! Notice she is the one parent who isn't in atevi custody at the end of the book. I'm sure that will become important.

Here's another question...would a "builder's key" like they used at Reunion override those locks even if they were reset? I would think there would have to be some sort of safeguard to prevent unauthorized persons from changing locks, or someone who did it maliciously in order to prevent the station from functioning normally.

Hmmm, you would expect a "builder's key" to override anything. Does anyone have those, besides the four Captains? Jase kept his in his office on the ship, which presumably is where it currently is -- not accessible for this operation.

Secondly, I have been a bit disappointed that the lack of plot in the last few books. I haven't been bored, but I have been restless, waiting for something to happen.

I agree with that! I'm guessing Tracker is one of those "transition" books that serve to set up events for the next book -- it would take too long to include these events in the next book, but there isn't enough action here to make a satisfying book.
(I include the books "Bren goes to the Station for the first time" and "everyone takes the train from Tirnamardi to Shejidan" in the same category.)
We get some pleasant details of atevi life, but, yeah, I agree that the plot is thin.

I wonder whether

  • She thinks we readers needed each plot point exposited, and explained, and discussed, repeatedly. And then exposited again. And again. And again. (In that case, She may have to end the series soon, because at this rate, it will take more than a single book to recap everything that has happened previously!)
  • or She forgets which parts she has already explained, so She explains it all over again. (Aren't alpha readers supposed to catch that sort of thing?)
  • or this book is full of deliberate padding, to make the page count match what the publisher asked for. (I hope not, because that's not how quality writing gets done.)

A couple of small personal observations:
1. I am not bothered in the least by what some see as a plot-line weakness. As far as I'm concerned, things are happening and we get to watch them do so. Herself's writing is as stylish and enjoyable as ever. Color me a happy camper with this latest Foreigner installment.

2. Irene has quickly become an amazing character. I will be inordinately surprised if she does not figure very prominently in this tale as it continues to unfold. The possible paidhi future speculated upon by a couple of people above seems quite reasonable to me. The thought struck me most forcefully when someone (I can't recall who, offhand) in Tracker mentions her being talented in math. Bing! And she seems to genuinely like (never using the word, of course!) atevi and their world. And, am I the only one in the world who started wondering about Herself's view of Herself as a youngster after learning what we have so far about Irene?

3. 'Sidi is, indeed, showing her age more and more. That is worrisome. It would, obviously, be a hell of a jumping-off point for tales that would need -- nay, demand -- several additional Foreigner books, but (selfishly) one hopes this does not develop.

4. How in the world am I going to be able to wait next spring?

It may be that Damiri's daughter will ultimately be Tatiseigi's heir.

I've received my copy of Tracker, and am going through the initial salt-free reading.  "Excellent creature!"

I agree that Seimuro may end up as just that, baji-naji and the crick don't rise. This is of course many years away. Unless Damiri ends up regenting for her.

I have also now received the book (yes I know, I'm well behind the power curve on this one) and on insufficient sleep done a salt-free reading as well.

This book really shows that we need two or three Brens, as he can't be everywhere at once.

It seems like Ogun has taken a step backwards, his interactions with Bren fundamentally unchanged from the days of Ramirez. "Heard of you, good and bad"?! REALLY?! Ogun should have a damn sight more personal and direct knowledge of Bren than that. He should have watched every scrap of security log featuring Bren that he could search from system -- isn't a defining prerequisite of making Captain knowing how to extract info from the computer?

He should know how exactly Bren works with ship authority, that Bren doesn't buckle under browbeating, and accept that given the very specific problem of the kyo, that Bren is practically the only person who has the very specific skillset to fix the problem, and give him some f--king latitude, instead of hammering on that "Obey obey obey" sh*t. I'd expect that of fourth captain, the n00b who doesn't know better. Unless the n00b is supposed to just be secondary Ogun, on the cantankerous/obdurate axis, with Jase/Sabin on the cooperative axis.

Looks like once again, atevi are going to literally have to save humanity from themselves. I'm expecting Bren to have to breach the Reunioner zone (dare I call it Q Section?) to give them information (because nobody else is), settle them down, and win them over to The Plan.

More to say but sleep overcomes me. Will continue.

I did a little bit of a re-read recently, at least the last "episode" in Tracker. I'm still intrigued by Irene's family; it's been hinted for some time that her mother is not on the level. And Irene doesn't want to see her again.

My impression of Irene's mother is that she is a neurotic idiot who is trying to pass her neurosis onto her daughter. Thanks to the boys, especially Cajeiri, Irene has been exposed to literally a whole new world. Mama isn't looking too good right now.

"... Jase/Sabin on the cooperative axis." Isn't it amazing how things/perceptions can change? Whoever would have thought of Sabin thusly when we consider how we met her?!

And while I might appreciate working with Sabin, I sincerely doubt I would be inviting her over for a friendly dinner.
