I've been wanting to re-read Foreigner ahead of the new one coming out, but found I was missing some volumes, so I stopped by a used bookstore on my way home tonight and picked up a good copy of "Invader" for fairly cheap, $6. Imagine my surprise to open it and find it autographed by both :cherryh: and Michael Whelan. Not quite as cool as getting it autographed to me, but nice all the same. I wonder if the person it was autographed to is known here?

I would be reasonably confident that no Associate here would deliberately, while alive, part with an autographed CJC book :)
I mean, that would be just WRONG.
But lucky you, Ashmire-Ji. What a find. I have a couple and they are my prized biblio possessions.
Edited to say, but I see that was not what you said. It may well be that the person to whom it was autographed is known here. Can you share the name?

My prized signed :cherryh: book was the one I acquired made out to some guy named "Marshall", until I received an even more prized one made out to "Starexplorer"

I thought it was Hubert, Star. My memory is tricking me :) or maybe it was Marshal Hubert? Or Hubert Marshall? Neither of whom hold a candle to yourself, of course. But if Ashmire now has custody of another HM, or MH, as the case may be, wouldn't that be wonderful !

I remember that whole discussion on Marshall! That was a long time ago.

Actually, I thought it was Herbert Marshall, or Marshall Herbert, but I just checked and it's actually "For Marshall, best wishes, CJ Cherryh"

I think we were trying to figure out what the rest of the name was and we decided Herbert must have gone with it.

:) It's someone named Shirley. I'd have a hard time imagining why anyone would part with an autographed copy, too---which always raises the sad spectre of an involuntary parting!

She probably had to sell it to get money to feed her starving infant- no less dire emergency could have justified an otherwise unaccountable act.

One hopes Shirley is still around somewhere and was later able to get another book.

At least it's good that someone else, who will appreciate it, got a good book, and autographed besides.

That ought to make Shirley feel better, whoever and wherever she is.

No doubt she cherished it, and made it part of her estate.

It may have been that Shirley has since departed this life and her ungrateful and ignorant heirs just didn't recognize the book for what it truly was.

sharper than a serpent's tooth is an ungrateful child. As my father used to say with some regularity.
