Citizen of the Association
Working on creating the marc edition of my company's winter book catalogue this weekend and got to "Tracker" and it's publisher-supplied description last night (it's already up on our webpage for customers to see, so not top secret):

"After surviving a series of attempted assassinations, Bren is relieved to have the threats dispelled and the younger generation of humans and atevi safe. Life settles back to normal on the space station - until a once-lost segment of human society returns, bringing a centuries-old conflict into Bren's life."

Let the speculating begin! :atwink

Well, either Braddock's folk are making their move, or Earth resurfaces/reconnects... or maybe another human ship has a similar accident? Maybe "rescue" from Earth, or researchers inadvertently replicating Phoenix's accident while trying to reconstruct what happened? "Hey Fred, what happens when we modulate the drive field in G-sharp minor?"

Taking into consideration that these early short promo descriptions aren't always the most plot-accurate things ever written (especially because they come out so far in advance of actual publication they often don't have a lot of story info to go on) ...

My guess is that, since life on the space station is mentioned, the "lost segment" is most likely to be the Reunion Station refugees. That fits seeing as the conflict that originally separated the human groups happened a couple of centuries ago, plus Bren's been planetside since the Phoenix returned so going back to the station would make their situation a new aggravation in his life ... he'll be experiencing them firsthand instead of just hearing about them from Jase and Geigi.

Agreed, station politics have been heavily hinted at in the latest installment, so Braddock and his crew raising a stink would totally fit the established world. Tying in some of the other Cherryh worlds would be fun, but just not logical or practical.

Still!

I seem to recall that an advance description of one of the previous books was in fact a description of its predecessor.

The long-lost branch is probably the Reunioners. It would be fun, though, if another human ship limped its way into the system.

Halloween is coming up, so this guy says, BOOOOoooo. :ghost

The statement from CJ that "they are in another universe" was meant to convey that they are not linked (or linkable, short of a Heinlein-esque MacGuffin) to the A/U/C universe/stories (Tully's Earth). Some folks took it to mean that they were in another universe from their own Earth-of-origin. Which would explain why they can't find home, but I personally don't think it's the answer.

So... are they talking a series of assassinations in this upcoming book, or are they talking about previous near death experiences Bren has had in the other books?

I wonder how his head is treating him, lol.

Here, let me help stir the pot! -- That could be a *very* interesting plot twist. Like it very much!

If connected to the Alliance/Union/Downbelow/Chanur Universi ... Phoenix and daughter ships are using a very different jump system where they are uncomfortable but awake and aware during transition/jump for the months of the trip. (well .. other than the navigator/sleep walkers in al/un/ch)

I still wonder if the alien folk in Foreigner series are an offshoot of Mahendosat?
