Oddly - or maybe not - I envisioned Irene as ending up working (as an adult), for old Lord Tatiseigi, curating porcelains... a kabiutera? (sp) GENE as paidhi - sort of.(I am probably leaning that way, because Bren regards Gene as like he (Bren) was at that age). I liked that the kids began to be differentiated as individuals this time: Gene the adventurer who is clearly wiser than his age would indicate, Arthur the budding scientist, noticing details in every direction, and Irene, who is afraid always and brave just as often, and who sees beauty in creation everywhere she looks. Cajeiri's world is expanding just as the 'world' is expanding (the station, the ship, the kyo): there will not be one SINGLE paidhi. Cajeiri himself is beginning to regard his human childhood friends as potential future assets - and he wants ALL of them. What I liked also - Tabini's clear understanding of Bren's nature, when he speculated that Bren got hurt because he was, once again, trying to protect his bodyguard! (true) Also liked it when Cajeiri mentions in passing that Lord Bren seldom lied, and was very bad at it when he did. Damiri clearly knew the same thing - she believed Bren when he told her things directly (or at least believed he believed it). |

Yeah, getting older means you don't bounce back nearly as quickly. Or, like you hint, it could be some sort of cranial swelling or internal bleeding, undiagnosed because "well he didn't seem to be badly off...until he collapsed..." |

And how can one possibly reward such care in numbers except by offering up another bookquote? (of course I'll have to do a third at some point for felicitiousness) My usual approach when tormenting people is, instead of starting at the beginning, to open the book at random and pick a sentence, with a preference for those that can have multiple interpretations or could have more than one possible speaker when out of context (yes, I've been doing this to my friends for years, and yet they still speak to me). So... "He calls me fickle, and changeable, but will apparently not believe I can back off from a feud which never mattered greatly in the first place!" |

Halfway through the book: Bren and team invade the Assassin's Guild headquarters via a "frontal" assault, basically. Only Tabini or Ilisidi have the power simply to barge in past the front gate, but Bren is granted Tabini's seal ring temporarily, which allows him to bully his way in past the front offices, which function as a sort of attorney-general's/court office for civilians. (Bren turns his "bully mode" to the max, it's a very tense scene.) Once they get inside, they mount an assault on the records department where the Shadow Guild villain-bureaucrat resides. Banichi should not really be along with them as he has not recovered from his encounter with Haikuti. Banichi's stiches come apart and he loses even more blood and requires more extensive medical work. An explosion (to blow a door down) causes chips to fly everywhere, with one piece hitting Bren on the back of the skull. Bren also sustains a lot of bloody injuries himself. However, the head injury and the persistent headache keep getting mentioned, over and over again, making me feel that CJC was going somewhere with it. However, the book ends without us reaching that point. The lead-up to the attack on Guild HQ consists of Bren setting his affairs in order, because it is quite possibly a suicide mission. That's why they won't send Ilisidi or Tabini to do it. Bren's life or death during the operation would be an asset either way. If he lives, they would restore the Guild to proper function. If he dies, the Guild would have murdered a high officer of the aiji's court entering on the aiji's business, and merit a messier but politically plausible clean-up operation. They are backed by the clandestine return of many Guild members who had fled from the Guild under its odd behaviour. So there are some spoilers for you :) |

The Setting Of The Affairs In Order is quite a spectacular bit in and of itself. He writes a bunch of letters to different people including Tabini and Cajeiri. To the former, he proposes that Tabini rely on Toby and Jase to provide the interface but to avoid dealing with Yolanda, because she's gone funny in the head. I had a feeling that we've been provided another plot coupon wrt Yolanda with that, but I've been wrong about these things before. Bren still has the Chekhov's gun of a data stick from Shawn Tyers for several books now, and I think it's just been forgotten. |

Ah Thank you! One can now endure the wait until I get the book somewhat more patiently, lol. This at least gives me some brain candy to think about. :P |

Fridge Logic Moment(tm): did he actually retrieve (and destroy, per his intent) those letters once he came back alive? CJ never says... Suppose they got delivered anyway? [Stupid wishful thinking from the Messengers Guild perhaps?] Hilarity Ensues! |

Especially since those letters all state, in essence, "If you are reading this, I'm dead." Recipients on the mainland know that Bren is alive, if a little shaky. Toby, on the other hand, . . . :atwink |

My fortunate third quote, which contains a detail I found most intriguing ... "Cenedi acknowledged Algini's presence with a nod. "Gini-ji, we have secured the entire hall, and we are mapping the last hours of function of that office, going back to yesterday dawn." Was rather surprised at Cenedi addressing Algini in that familiar way and in a more-or-less public place during an operation to boot. |

Heh heh, I wondered that too. Bren had done something like that before, on the ship before heading into the station.
Ooh, missed that one. Will have to go though it again, how terrible. I also enjoyed reading Geigi's history. I wonder if Bren was surprised to learn that he had been sent to Malguri to satisfy Ilisidi's curiousity, or if that was an item he already understood. It certainly explained something I was confused about, namely that there was something going on, which had nothing to do with the ship returning, that prompted Tabini to take Bren shooting and give him a gun. :t |

Bren doesn't seem to be as dependent on his computer as he used to be. About the only thing that it gets used for anymore is when he wants to look up some complicated family tree, or write a rough draft of a report. He didn't have much of a chance to use it during the earlier crisis, and hasn't needed it since. By the time Bren does need the data stick, it will be obsolete. :atwink |

What's a Chekhov's Gun? I'm reading The Overcoat (that's the one with the singing gargoyles, right?) but haven't seen the gun yet. Kkkttt Hkkt 1341 [0341GMT, 2041PST] Th. 10 Apr. 2014. |
