thank you all, it was a most enjoyable day for me. My neighbors didn't leave me any "presents" on the driveway or the side of the house or the deck, and my car wasn't keyed, the tires slashed, or the windshield broken. I lazed around for a few hours, then headed up to the range to help out with the Junior trapshooting practice. Plus, I wanted to have some time of my own for :shoot: , so I took one of my rifles up with me and put some rounds downrange through a paper target. Watching the kids is a lot of fun, as long as they do everything safely, I'm comfortable. I only had 2 people point their shotguns in my direction last night. Much improvement from last Thursday, when 2 different people did it, but one of them did it 5 times. sheesh! I was going to bake myself a birthday cake, but I can't remember where I put the cake mixes!!!! :Arrgh: |

I use a set of electronic muffs, they're distributed by Dillon Precision, they allow me to hear normal sounds, but cut out whenever a sound above a certain db level is nearby. They help a lot, and are a lot less irritating than earplugs, which make my ears itch, and have to be cleaned or the wax will introduce dirt into the ear canals. It was a lot of fun, I actually had a good time. I didn't bring my shooting vest, and the only thing between the rifle butt and my shoulder was a t-shirt. The first time I did THAT, I was sore after 8 shots. It's how you snug the rifle into your shoulder that makes a difference. All of my shots were low and slightly to the left of the black area, except for one round. I need to work on my sight picture, my breathing, and trigger-squeeze. Xheralt-ji might be familiar with the M-16, but the M-1 is a ninety-year old design, and uses a larger cartridge, with more powder and a larger heavier bullet. Since my only targets are paper, and I am careful about where the targets are placed (there's a 35 foot high embankment behind the targets and the firing line is above the targets so we're always shooting downward), I don't have to worry about stray shots wandering over the embankment and hitting the neighbor's house. We've been having problems with shooters at our range who don't seem to understand that if you think it's a good place to learn trick shots, it's not the place for you. It's not a toy, it's a tool, but some people shouldn't be allowed to come within 10 feet of a firearm. Thank you all for the kind birthday wishes. Alan-M, I hope you had a great birthday, too! |

I've had the opportunity to fire an M-1 once; as I recall the sight picture was similar enough to the M-16's. But yes, holding technique -- and a firm stock-to-shoulder weld -- becomes important. |
