What a great idea for a celebration. I have oodles of tomatoes on the vine and some are just about ready. Tiny little green peppers, tall, elegant chives, blossoming towers of basil and sage and my little lazy oregano plant. And the cilantro, which is struggling but survives. All squeezed into my apartment balcony. It looks like a forest out there--the tomato plants are higher than the rail. :inlove: I haven't tried to make my own butter. I didn't know you could make it just by shaking it in a jar, without a mixer. In the supermarket here, at least, the price of cream is so high that it's cheaper to buy butter than make it yourself. A pint of cream is $4, while I found a pound of butter on sale for $2. I have so many soup recipes that ask for cream I wish it were less pricey. But there are substitutes... half 'n' half isn't much cheaper, but I have some canned evaporated milk that was on sale for $1. It makes great creamy tomato basil soup. As for tomato mozzarella, I don't see why not. The best local cheesemaker here sells excellent gouda cheese, they add sun-dried tomato. It's my favorite in all the world. Bread is definitely cheaper to make yourself. The whole grain type I prefer is $3 or $4 now, while you can get a whole sack of flour for about the same price, and yeast is not expensive. I don't make loaves, I make flat bread, the kind you have with gyros or hummus and tzatziki. They don't always turn out... but they're edible, and I'm learning. What an interesting history to that ballad. I'd never heard it before. I'm listening to Cocteau Twins this morning. It's sort of a lazy day since the concert I was going to attend was canceled. |

Bread is expensive---but baking is expensive, too, because of the electricity. Though I honestly don't know how much it costs to bake a bread, energy-wise. I'm hungry. :flower: |

I think it's less expensive to bake the bread, though I don't really know. Out of one recipe (for example this french bread recipe) I got four loaves of bread. (In the example of the pizza dough, I got six small pizzas from it, half of one enough to feed to me for a meal, so that's basically twelve meals gotten from one recipe of pizza dough. Not to mention adding an infinite variety of taste treat delights to the everyday.) The bread and pizzas freeze very well, by the way. |

Neco, can you post your french bread recipe in the cookbook thread? My husband has been asking for a baguette instead of the other types of bread I've been trying, but I can't seem to find a recipe that yields precisely what he is looking for. |
