So, whether you celebrate it in any way or not, I hope you're all having good time. For me, this is the best holiday after Christmas. ;) Last winter was so dark and gloomy (and snowless) that I'm really enjoying all this light. Too bad they're saying it'll be a rainy Midsummer this year. So, as I most likely won't manage to get a pretty night time pic this time, I'll just throw here one from last year. Posted Image Tomorrow we head to my aunt's summer place, as always. :flower: :fish2 :flower: Rain or shine, me is happy. ^^ |

I´m preparing for midsummer, too, and having a good time. Going to my cottage tomorrow to have a little party, eat favorite food and drink with a lot of toasts due to the forest spirits and old gods .......they are close at midsummer night here in Sweden! |

Ah, Agari-ji, we are neighbors, then. I'm from Finland and yes, like you, heading for the cottage for Midsummer. ^^ (Btw, noticed you live in Malmö. I spent a view months in Lund on student exchange a couple of years ago.) And Griffin-ji, you can do the nodding tomorrow, too. I'm a bit early, just cause I won't have internet tomorrow. ;) |

Heh, Cecily-ji, different names in different places, I guess. *g* But as it is, this is the summer solstice, the day is at its longest now, and soon the light time begins getting shorter again, and in that sense we're in the middle of the light period - i.e. summer. On the northern hemisphere, anyway. And thanks, Resa. I do like that pic myself. :) |

Midsummer greetings, to all of you. Heading towards the ultimate festival of fertility, the invoking of the spirits, the mysteries and rites... :atwink Anyway, I'm looking forward to some pickled herrings, some rhubarb pie, and a low alcohol beer. The time when I spent midsummer's eve/night awake, pursuing the games of youth, revelling in general debauchery, is far off in the past. Having a small kid, and being patently not superstitious, tend to do that to you :grin And, by the way, I'm quite busy watching the Euro 2008 finals anyway. Wonderful picture, Tuuli. I once spent a midsummer in southern Finland, close to Anttola/Mikkeli, in a place looking much like that. |

I envy you Scandanavians your solstice festivities - so worth celebrating! we are not quite far enough north here in NYC to claim this event. But I've always been intrigued. One of my favorite books many years ago was I Capture the Castle, which among many other events featured a summer solstice observance that always seemed just the thing to me. |

Kokipy-ji: Midsummer rites are not limited to Scandinavians, y'know...Any body of almost any heritage can indulge in same as done by their ancestors... |

True, very true, Griffin-ji. We have attend winter solstice parties, gathering around a crackling bonfire and sipping spirits. But somehow the occasion being celebrated by an entire culture & community -- family, neighbors & friends -- is enchanting! |

The real thrill for the really northern people is that on that day the sun really never really sets, right? we dont have quite the same experience in the southern latitudes. [yes, me too, Pence! loved the castle, and how her father extracted himself from writer's block has always stayed with me] |

I'd imagine. I don't live north enough for that, though the "dark" time is just a few hours here at the shortest. That pic I posted is taken around 3 am. (hah, I was checking the weather forecast the other day online, and out of curiosity checked some pretty northern places. The site tells also the lenght of the day. I found it a bit funny, how they just said "the sun doesn't rise or set today." ^^) Had a fun Midsummer (although I managed to get sick.) Hope you all - who did something during this time - had fun too. ^^ Some year I'd really love to go to Midsummer dances... Heh, just because: here's a couple of waltzes from my official "Midsummer playlist": Saaremaa vals and Kesäillan valssi. (The first is Estonian, sung by Georg Ots.) :bunny7: They make me want to dance even though I'm sick. ^^ |
