Pronunciation; for many words in CJC books

This is something I wrestle with. Happily, we have the ultimate court of appeals. However CJ says it's pronounced, that is how it is pronounced, full stop or period as your English dialect goes. Is there a fairly comprehensive pronunciation guide on Shejidan to names and terms in CJ books? I hate when I have mentally repeated the same word many times and fixed the sound in my head, and then later learned I was wrong. So I would like to get them right.

Haut's Cool Sound Files are what you want!

They are buried in Haut's hysterical MidSouthCon report, accessed via the
Shejidan home page (& which I just posted about in MEETPOINT STATION'S RadCon thread). Click on the con program cover.

Those are great, Sk8er. They represent a fraction of the whole, of course, albeit one of the more opaque fractions. One might have to start working on a master list from varying books, present them to CJ when opportunity permits, make notes and have them covered for all time and eternity.

Yup. Yup. Me like'th this idea. And via sound files, if we could. Since I have to hear a word for my mind to attach to it.

Of course, it should be done only if it does not interfere with Aiji :cherryh: 's creativity. And any rest and relaxation that leads to that creativity.

The good news there is that patience wins. At some point there would be an opportunity, when Herself was not distracted by it or impaired in leisure. In the meantime, one could compile the list(s). I think the best method is to have a list for each series rather than commingling them all.

My favorite series might be Chanur. I've read most of the Alliance-Union series, atevi series, Faded Sun, Dreaming Tree and Chanur. Beyond those I'm useless. But the real way to compile a list is when re-reading a series. I'd have to be doing that in order to feel I'd been comprehensive, because it would be awkward to have to go back for a second round when one could do them all once and get them right.

How do you make sound files?

If I could master the technical aspects, quite possibly Herself :cherryh: would make recordings that could be posted here. :baji

The easy way is with a PC that's miked up and in the hands of someone familiar with the process (I'm not terribly good at such things). Logical time to try it is probably Shejicon, I'd guess, unless opportunity arises sooner.

For anyone who's seriously into this, the best way would be when you're doing a re-read of a series. Stick a piece of paper into your book and start noting words you don't know how to pronounce. When done with the series, post the whole list here (ideally by alpha). What would be unmanageable is if people just willy-nilly posted this or that word that they remember never knowing how to pronounce, from whatever series. That would require someone to monitor and collate all of them, plus it would not give any assurance of a complete list for a given series. Think of it like housecleaning: it would generally be better to clean one area and clean it to glistening than to just dink around the whole house doing a few small tasks that never get any single area up to snuff.

I will commit to re-reading at least one of the following series before Shejicon:

Chanur
Faded Sun
Morgaine

I'm due for a re-read of the Foreigner series, but can't for sure commit to re-reading nine books. My work involves a lot of research and often cuts into my rec reading time. Also, since Foreigner is the series I understood least and struggled with most in the early books, it's not going to be a casual re-read where a lot looks familiar.

I would also do Dreaming Tree, but for that one Herself included a guide. Very helpful!

Kel Julian nadi:

Your suggestion is a good one & it's been implemented over time. I will attempt to attach a copy of the list to date.

okay let's see if this worked...nope...nope...gyah, I'm really dim on things computer & I've forgotten how to do this. Let me work on it...perhaps Nand'Spence has it, I think I posted it somewhere, once...

The words in chanur are very easy in theory. At least they're phonemic. But, actually producing the alien sounds, well that's a different matter.

I will look up the Work we have on the Ragi language. It's still in progress.
