I reminded her about the book on the shelf. And she simply said that she didn't want to read that one, because she didn't want to damage it.

Yes, there are collectors who will buy two copies -- one to stuff into a plastic bag and lay on its side until it greatly appreciates in value and one to actually read. I have even met collectors who buy only a single hardback, stuff it into a plastic bag, lay it on its side until it greatly appreciates in value, wait a year, then buy the paperback to read.

Nah, she doesn't care if it goes up in value. She just doesn't want to hurt the dust jacket. She just wants the book to always be there, bright and shiny.

She's even framed dust jackets in the past. But I like mine on the book.

I don't reread and reread and reread EVERYTHING I enjoy, but I do reread REPEATEDLY - THESE books. Bren, and all his family and acquaintances, his 'friends' and his 'associates' - to me they are real people with real lives that keep going on BETWEEN the books, and around them and while the main action is elsewhere.

If it were not so, why would I care about these ragged bits and pieces of story that appear and vanish, or the numbers that behave oddly?

Cola-ji, I concur. Are you sure we're not related? Maybe twins of different mothers or somethin'? I read the entire Foreigner series at least once a year, just as I re-read letters from dear friends far removed. About a month before publication, I pre-order the newest volume and then start on the series, but this thread has driven me to re-read the series earlier than normal (partially because I didn't read the entire series before Deliverer arrived.) Now my whole "to be Read" pile has taken on a life of its own and I'm afraid to buy, or borrow any more books by lesser authors 'cause there's just not enough time between work, travel for work, and family obligations.

I do the same thing - and am also re-reading the series 'sooner' than 'usual'. If you wish to be quasi-siblings, I can certainly welcome another: the internet has been a rich source of relatives!

have some :t and sit a while.

It has occurred to one that the series starts as a set of novels of politics and changes midstream as it were into an adventure series. Now that we are back on terra firma as it were, it will be interesting to see if it changes back!

Pence-ji, One expects that your supposition will be supported (with book titles "Conspirator" and "Deceiver" (possibly)) one gets back to a more politically based complexity of motives that has one salivating in anticipation.

:cherryh: did mention that Ilisidi was in 'fine form' and that woman lives, breathes and sleeps politics.

I want to know what Barb has been up to at Bren's estate while he's been out and about in the east.

And what, or WHO is going to get the joy of being in charge of Cajeiri NOW?

He rescued himself! What a kid!

and (on rereading that last book probably the ninth time) it finally dawned on me why Bren actually shot Murini to death On PURPOSE. He had 'his son' behind him and was protecting the child!

(Would he have deliberately shot Murini, to kill, if he'd been alone? Possibly - but just as possibly not. They really will have to get Bren a license! He could have a code name, like maybe 007! Fortuitous number!)

I positively HATE Barb.
I do understand building of plot and tensions. But I still don't have to LIKE her, do I?

One also hates waiting. Does anyone have any knowledge of the publication schedule?

In the past, the Divine One :cherryh: has said it is approximately eight months between the time the manuscript is accepted and the day the completed book hits the bookstore shelves.

I received my fall '08 catalogues from Penguin a couple weeks ago, and Cyteen II is no where to be found. On another thread, Felicitous Sk8r gave us a pub date that should have been covered by the fall season catalogue. I hope Cyteen II will be "tipped in" by the time my Penguin rep comes in next Monday for my fall order.

The last three Foreigner books were all published in sequential Februaries. Given when :cherryh: sent off the recently completed manuscript, I'm going to venture that this trilogy will be published in either sequential Decembers or Januaries. All things being equal, I'm leaning more to January. That way, the book will not get lost in the Christmas clutter and many people will have gift cards or gift money to pay for the book.

January works very well for me. My birthday is in that month, so my husband will have no trouble figuring out what do get me. He usually buys me a book or DVD anyway.

I just got back from vacation. The books I took along for reading were the Foreigner series. It is the series that I have re-read more often than any others that I've re-read.

I've also re-read recently Zelazny's Amber series, the Harry Potter series, the Vorkosigan series (Bujold.)

edited since I can't spel
