The moment of awe for me was in Ilisidi's rant at Bren in Foreigner itself. The Balcony Rant. It raised a lot of questions that the series has not yet answered. The other moment was the dinner party with Sabin in Defender. It was like a space battle. The shock when both the reader and Bren realizes how this cannot but end is delicious. |

I was very touched by the scene in which Jago learns of Bren's mother's death. She says something like: I would say whatever words are appropriate. Very simple, but very sincere. A clear understanding that traditions are different, |

The whole scene on the train is marvelous. And the moment in the engine when the crew member turns around and stunned, Bren simply said: Aijii-ma. The train hurtling along with the guild members on top and the black and red banners flying and the people along the tracks cheering! I thought: this is the stuff that legends are made of. Not to mention Illisidi and Tatiseigi calmly sipping tea. |

Terrific 'visuals' in that scene with the train. It made me want to see the movie! |

Regarding Bren and possible children. Remember Sandra Johnson in Inheritor, who Bren sometimes had one candle nights? And in Defender, she sent him the spider plants and a picture of her sons. One of whom was named Brent. :atwink |

I've wondered about that too. It would be interesting to see if Brent suddenly shows an interest in joining the foreign office. |

Even though I noticed the Brent thing, I thought the children came along later. At the end of Invader, Sandra had only her plants, but not a family or significant other that she needed to get out of Dodge when she came across the strait with Toby and Shawn. |

That's right - Sandra and two named house plants. No husband and no kids yet. I guess she maybe named Brent after him, though - maybe. Is 'Bren' short for anything? |

Back to the general "Anything 'Sidi-ji does steals the scene" sentiment: "You have no relationship with this woman they've sent?" "Deanna Hanks." "This woman, I say." "I have none such," he said. "Not the remotest interest, I assure the dowager." "Pity." "Oh, I don't think so, nand' dowager." He applied cream to a muffin, or tried to. A servant slipped in a little deft help and he abandoned the effort to the servant. "Such an inconvenience," Ilisidi said. "Lack of appeal in my professional associate - or the broken arm?" Ilisidi was amused. A salt-and-pepper brow quirked on an impeccably grave black face. Gold eyes. "The arm, actually..." My grandmother used to act just like this. Well, less poison in the tea, but she had the cane (adolescent polio) and the *stamp* of the ferrule when en-crank-ified. And sharp sharp sharp. I re-read the entire series yearly (along with Cyteen, the Chanur novels, and Lord of the Rings) mainly for mani-ma. :salad: |

Ilisidi is delightful - but I want more TABINI! I just started rereading the second trilogy - and that funeral speech! Wow! 'we live - between the second and third bells....' doesn't he seem much grimmer in the last trilogy? not that he doesn't have plenty of reason! |

I have been re-reading Foreigner for the first time in several years, and I really can't help but notice how some of the main characters are skewed in comparison to the subsequent volumes, as though the Great One :cherryh: intended it to be a one-off, then found herself with an audience demanding "More!" (Kind of reminds me of SW: A New Hope in relationship with the remainder of the movies; Lucas has been digging himself in and out of holes ever since trying to rectify matters.) Cenedi is really off to me. I don't know how to explain it, but rereading Cenedi's actions is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Throwing an ancient tea set into the fire? Doodling with paperwork? This Cenedi seems almost flighty in comparison with the later Cenedi. (Or at least it is to me. Others may strongly disagree with my opinion. :grin ) And Bren has way too high a regard for Deana Hanks in Foreigner. He would never consider sneaking off for a few days and letting the Hanks of Invader do his job. In Foreigner, he's not fond of her and he pokes a little fun at her, but in Invader and Inheritor, he is downright hostile about her and the political group she represents. And I still have yet to figure out why Jago hauled off and slapped Bren clear into next week in Foreigner. The way the Great One :cherryh: writes the scene, it looks to me like Jago isn't acting to convince the other side that she despises the paidhi, but that she is sincerely pissed at him. Oh, well, so far I haven't allowed these to me inconsistensies interfere with my reading pleasre, and I really doubt I will in the future either. |

I think you need to read the story and suspend belief perhaps they all had truamatic experiences between books and that changed them falling out of a canoe could be a truamatic experience ban the :cherryh: from canoes I need to know the ending |

Just "suspending disbelief" is something of a cop-out. But welcome abouard anyway, nadi kyran :atwink I personally put it down to Jago, not knowing Bren foibles quite so well (at that point), nor being inclined to forgive them (at that point), simply reacted to one of his unintentional oversteppings of a boundary in the way most ateva would... The :cherryh: is not that fragile, and expressed Intent to try the recreational boating thing again. Would 'Sidi-ma cease riding if she ever fell off of her mecheita? I think not! If she was truly endangered, help was immediately at hand -- including, I might add, my humble self and Sk8tr, had the guides not been that much closer at hand and gotten there first. |
