Great memories!

I like all of the stories from Cajeiri's point of view. One of my favorites was when he had to be "sick" again when he was imprisoned and hacking his way through the wall and heard his captors coming back.

I also liked the place when Bren was in the bus barreling along and passing the bus there roared a car carrying Ilisidi.

Maybe my favorite scene was one already mentioned, where Bren jumps on Tabini to save him and is then taken into the Atevi circle by the wondering Atevi.

I am enchanted by Bren's figuring out how to speak the Alien languages.

Hm, it's about time to re-read the series, yet again, I can tell.

I think they did a little too good of a job.

I must disagree. If every action of ONE person were to represent, affect or reflect upon or possibly end the lives of EVERY SINGLE HUMAN IN MY WORLD, I would want that person to be OBSSESED with double checking - no TRIPLE checking - every darn move, twitch or sound he/she makes. Paranoid sounds kinda good at that point.

Not necessarily a warm/fuzzy moment but did you notice....

Our favorite human hater--Uncle--had that human affectation, wine, on hand to feed to Bren when his party blew into Tirnamardi? Atevi don't favor wine in general & Uncle won't have human accoutrements in his Historic residence--but he has wine. One suspects the ol'boy is a bit of a hypocrite!

One believes that Herself :cherryh: mentioned that atevi generally don't prefer fermented beverages, they favor distilled ones.

I don't know why but I love the scene where Bren and Cajeiri hide under the train engine while Banichi and co. are securing the Bujavid train station during Tabini's return to power. This was a hiding space that only a human or atevi child (read- small people) could think of.

Although, when I first read that scene I expected someone to start backing the engine out and running over my hero.

Oh I'm sure the Atevi understand the concept of fermentation, its a very old technology for humanity (babylonian at least), and is one of those steps in chemistry a technical civilisation needs to acquire.

But its likely wine is not a Ragi 'thing' or somesuch.

Hn. One thought that it was vodka that was the disreputable human import, and that wine was very much atevi produce that needed no help from humans to figure. Ilisidi's comment to Bren on "supporting his vices" ie. vodka with unseasonable ice seems to suggest that. It would seem that wine or alcohol in general seem to be a large part of atevi hospitality. THough looking back on the thread, it would seem that one is in error. Though where does it say that atevi dislkie wine? And what is the difference between say, fermented alcohol and distilled? One not being a drinker is curious.

barleysmama-nadi, one shudders at the thought of that scenario you posited. Avert!

Another favourite scene to add to the growing list: Damiri's insistence on surveying the damage in the Atageini apartment after the failed attempt on the paidhi, and the argument between her and Tabini. One especially had to try not to bust a vessel from laughing so hard at "Heir, heir, heir, of course the heir! Any moment, nai-ji, perhaps tonight, nai-ji..."

You'd quickly discover the difference if you tried to drink a wine glass full of gin or whisky! :draugh

Fermented beverages, wines and beers, rarely gain an alcohol content above 12 proof whereas distilled beverages attain alcohol content from 35 up to 90 proof!. This is why they are usually mixed with something to slow down the alcohol ingestion rate.

I'm sure that there was beer being served to atevi at one of the pizza parties.

Yes - alcohol levels above about 15% by volume kill the yeast and stop the fermentation process. The highest I've seen in bottled (non-fortifed) wine is 14% alc by volume.

And I also remember a beer reference somewhere in the books but can't remember the details - Toby's boat, perhaps?

Arianne nadi:

Nand'Mule has said it all: it's the difference between wine & whiskey. Shibei is something more akin to brandy (and Bren-safe too). Atevi distilled products either retain much of the toxic (to humans) alkaloids or "flavoring" alkaloids are added by atevi distillers.
One also thinks there was a reference to beer & a fishing trip a couple of times. So humans have retained the preference for & ability to make beer/ales/wines/& probably their own distilled products.

Nadiin:
I finally remembered the other thing I noted: atevi have down-filled coats/jackets. Since Herself stated early on that there was nothing resembling a "bird" such as we would know, one wonders what those jackets are stuffed with? The atevi version of kapok? Mecheiti down/wool? Other animal sources? (Such as what passes for sheep & goats?)

On atevi and fermented drinks - in the closing scene in Deliverer they have wine for breakfast (yuk, in my view). And I'm quite sure I've seen other references to wine, none of them saying the atevi prefers distilled products or that wine is a human thing. But maybe Herself has said some such?

The only beer reference I can remember is when Bren is off in space and longs to be back on 'earth' - he wishes for a boat trip, no bait on the hooks, and a case of beer.

Griffinmoon - down coats and birds... a case of classic :cherryh: amnesia?! :atwink

Indeed, that's why one was wondering. Or...
"Down" is also used for extremely short fiber fur from animals: camel "down", Icelandic wool's "thel", kid Mohair, cashmere, etc. Perhaps that's what She's thinking.
Then there's various plant fibers: kapok, bamboo "silk", thistle down, etc. One also supposes that atevi would utilize "silk"-type sources too: what passes for spiders or moths there.
I suppose we could fill in the blank & not have to wonder about Herself...

It may be that atevi use fermented fruit products (wine, brandy), and fermented grain products (beer, vodka) are human imports (potato vodka would also fall into this category). Atevi liquors may in fact be flavored brandy.

Hm, I wonder if atevi have fermented and distilled sugar cane/beet/whatever, also known as rum.

As for wine for breakfast, haven't you ever heard of mimosas (champagne and orange juice) and Kir Royale (champagne and black currant syrup/liquor)?
:cheers
