'letting things fall where they may' oh yes! I am a terrible micromanager by nature, but there are times when i'd just as soon chuck it all - tempting. Bren did exactly as he should. Jago is not his equal. She is his security (in a lot of meanings). He might occasionally do something for her that she cannot do for herself, or would find difficult (braiding hair) but he cannot - CAN not, 'do' for her those things she can easily do for herself (like pour water over her head). He is the 'lord', and it is her duty to do that for him - it is not his responsibility to do that for her. Atevi-think. I think so, anyway. He would want to - and should not, and knows it. |

I think there might be an even easier explanation than that: The water jug is ceramic and Atevi sized, therefore heavy. Bren comes up to Jago's elbow? Certainly he is no taller than her shoulder. There is no way, short of standing wet and naked on a chair, that he will be able to pour a heavy jug of water over her head unless Jago hunkers down into "littleness." One sounds unacceptably dangerous and the other unbearably uncomfortable and undignified. But quite an image, no? :grin |

 @ BetYeager ! Either or both explanations make sense to me. I suppose since they are intimate that Bren might perform the service, as long as there is no one else around. But possibly Bren's being too small is the most logical. edited since I don't want to double post: Another favorite moment is when the Atevi suspect that the ship is without leadership and instinctively they have intentions of taking over that function. One reason I like the series is that :cherryh: has such a strong concept of the aliens. |
