Agricola nadi:
Bren's eyes are blue, I just can't recall where all this is mentioned.

That's what I remember, too. As I re-read the series, I'll keep my eyes open for the reference.
(heh!)

I have been considering my favorite scene in the series, and think it may be when Bren stands up to the ship people and gets quarters for his group and the baggage left alone.

My definite favorite is the tent scene with Jago where he asks about the guns and then later goes out into the pouring cold rain and considers himself insane for standing in the water with the lightning all around - this works on so many different levels beyond the obvious one. He is a human standing in a position where he risks the lightning of atevi displeasure both physically and politically. He knows he stands in danger yet he risks it to preserve the relations he has with the atevi. This was the scene that cemented nand :cherryh: as my favorite author above some others that have been mentioned in the "To Read" threads.

This one is always getting static for re-reading the series. Thank you for the evidence that I am indeed normal. I will check out the new series by Bujold while patiently waiting for #10 & #2 (Cyteen). I have my new copy (C#1) waiting for the release of #2.
If we are talking favorites-I will also vote for the tent scene. I now will have to start the series again as this one is homesick.
As I wait
and wait

and wait. :sob:

I am about to move all the Non-cherryh posts from this thread to the The Tashrid forum, where other authors are discussed. What would you like me to call this new thread: Bujold's works?

Much of Bren's suffering seems to be cold-related. The first time he was exposed to the numbing cold on the station, he hadn't had time or knowledge to think of gloves. One wishes that he would use insulated underwear so that he would not be uncomfortable so much of the time. I'd think that his staff would be able to come up with something.

Indeed, Nadi!

One can say from harsh personal experience that being too cold is far worse than being too hot; hence I left Seattle for Bangkok forever, and though it was muggy today I'll take sweat over shivers. :Arrgh:

Bren's various ailments and discomforts are a large part of what makes him so real and endearing to me. Rest assured esteemed associates, one can not re-read the adventures of Bren too many times (he says as he seriously contemplates a fourth go.)

Ah, I had almost forgotten that one, but true enough ready-ji, that's one of my favorites too. :salad:

Personal tastes, I guess. xD I cannot stand hot weather. I don't function in hot weather, I just turn into a puddle on the ground - a puddle that has headache. And sweat rash. A puddle that's irritated and cranky and dreaming of wonderful cold snow..... :invert (And my definition of "hot" might differ from some other people's...)

I get uncomfortably hot as soon as the temps get over about 80 degrees. One can DRESS for cold, but nothing can be done for 'hot' except to remove oneself from it entirely.

Right now here it's in the 60's for the highs, and I think it is just terrifically comfortable, if rather breezy. We are supposed to be in the high 80's over the weekend, and I think I may go to a higher elevation (hiking in the mountains nearby) to avoid the terrible heat. Good thing it's dry heat, or it would really be unbearable.

Favorite scene in that book was in the half ruined fortification, when Rejiri (the boy from Djur) has been captured attempting to approach, and Ilisidi begins questioning him - Bren grasps the 'emotional tenor' of the occasion and plays the appropriate (atev) part, which reassures Rejiri and allows him to present his information.

Ah, yes.

paraphrase of earlier moment

"I know where they would land"

Everyone turned as one to look at the boy from Dur.

A person after my own heart! As soon as the temp hits 70, I start kvetching at the top of my lungs. Halfway through February, I start figuring how many more months until October and fairly certain cool temps. I loathe summer with every fiber of my being!!!!!

Tuuli, I suspect yours and my definition of "hot" might be fairly close. I have come to realize over the years that my normal body temperature is 98 degrees with no .8. I have speculated that perhaps having a slightly lower temperature makes me less sensitive to cold and more sensitive to heat.

And back on topic: I love the scene in Pretender when, after their bath, Jago is sitting on the bedroom floor while Bren sits on the bed and braids her hair. It is so indicative of Jago's trust in Bren and Bren's pleasure in being able to do little services like that for her.

I don't like the heat either. I wilt.

Another favorite scene is when Bren finds out that Barb is married. The instincts of his security were to get revenge, and he had to assure them that it wasn't needed.

That scene was certainly a graphic example of Bren's many issues - or the number of disparate items he was expected (expected of himself?) to juggle! a personal life, a professional obligation to Mospheira with a political dimension, a professional and political obligation to Tabini and the atevi government - personal and professional obligations to his own security, AND to the (relatively unfamiliar with humans) staff of Damiri's residence - with the ship humans communicating at intervals depending on THEIR interests, and certainly not considering the business (or time schedules) of the people on the planet....

I'd go nuts. Screaming into the darkness. Hiding in the bushes and crying in my pillow at night. All day long.

The scene after resucing Cajieri in Pretender - when they are back in Tatiseigi's house and the room is all shot up. Tano is drawing the bath and Bren is stripping naked - in walks Damiri. Bren is comfortable buck naked with his "mixed" security but grabs a gun with one hand and a coat with the other to cover the "important" parts. He goes on to have a civilized conversation wth Damiri - bowing etc. This cracks me up.

Then the drain around the bath tub on which he stands to sluice himself off.
Jago comes in to help him pour the vase of water over himself. Then Bren gets in the tub - LEAVING JAGO to sluice herself off. There are times when Bren dissapoints me.

Loving the nth re-read.

Oh and forgot to add

IMHO The stresses of today's life results in many people feeling these stresses in just ordinary life. I know I do for sure! But I'm coming to love the idea of letting things fall where they may :baji
