After a dentist's appointment yesterday, I managed to find a used book store selling the First Printing editions of a few of :cherryh: 's works. My. I must admit, that book covers in the 70's were, ehm, in a word: interesting. (Even studying art history and the history of illustration doesn't prepare one for the stylistic differences in sci-fi works over the years. Romance novel covers, of course, haven't changed at all)

Naturally I purchased the ones I could find, as I'm a collector of covers and artwork.

I think I shall track down the artists and try to achieve permission to scan in a few and post them here, for posterity's sake.

Oh, PLEASE do!
And I am tremendously jealous! First-prints! Even if in less than stellar condition I would have snapped them right up.

My cousin has the first-prints (found at a garage sale a long time ago), hard backs, of the entire Faded Sun series. They too have very interesting covers. Though I think the last one was quite nice. The jackets are not in the best condition, but the books themselves are quite solid and readable. And I adore having access to them. I really love hard backs.

Please don't take my word as the final one, but I suspect a cover scan may be covered under "fair use".

I know that when someone obtains an Advance Reading Copy of Herself's latest missive, and posts the first paragraphs, or a large chunk of the first chapter, that the publisher looks at it like free advertising & doesn't mind. This is also because it is basically a limited post, & no one is selling what is posted. This is direct advice from Herself.

Cover scans may well be the same. Also: artwork belongs to the publisher as well as the artist so *if* permission is needed, you may need it from both.

Does anyone know more about this issue? I would LOVE to see the covers posted.

BTW, google up "Cherryh Fantastic Fiction", and there is a UK site with all of Herself's books listed, in groups -- and with cover art (1 per book).

If we're talking first print hardcovers, I believe the first real hardcover novel by Cherryh was Angel with the Sword (DAW 1985). There were, of course, Book Club hard covers of most of her novels before that one. And if one likes to see the dubious quality of the art chosen by SFBC the books by Cherryh are just as good a display as any other author's. I truly dispise the cover to the Chronicles of Morgaine. The artist had no knowledge of perspective. And the cover for The Paladin is also very ugly.

A few years into the 80's the covers become copies of the original publications. Cuckoo's Egg is one example.

That's my memory as well. Unlike many here, I liked the cover art on the SFBC hardback Faded Sun books.

I also like the abstractedness of those covers but Michael Whelan's original cover for Kutath is a real gem.
