I remember a thread wherein someone was wondering what would be a good Cherryh book to intro the young to. Maybe that's the one you're thinking of? [Okay, at this point I was going to put a link to the thread in question, but apparently, since my software was upgraded, I don't know how to copy an email addy. However, the name of the thread is Some Advice Requested...., ..about teenage girls and Cherryh books, and the posting date was Feb. 14, 2007. It was here in The Cherryh Grove. Maybe someone more computer-savvy (practically anyone, no doubt) could find it and link it.] |

I don't think this is the thread, but it's a start: Recommendations for a first sci fi book Off to look further... *Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick tock.* I'm back. There are probably similar threads, but try this: Hello, other half of the Cherryh Pit! |

There was also the thread about which Cherryh to recommend to Star-ji's friend that loves Dunnett but had not read sf before. |

Oh I forgot to give the follow up. Boy was that a bust! She seemed pleased with the recommendation -- I left my lending copy of Cyteen with her -- though she evinced some apprehension about a new genre and about her To Read pile. Last week, about a year later, I received an email from her husband: "Greetings--we were doing a very trivial and inadequate amount of fall cleaning and scooped up your copy of Cyteen which has been sitting in our front hall for... years?... silently rebuking [xxxxx] for not reading it, and finally decided the statute of limitations had run out and it was time to clear its spot in the front hall for [insert kid's name]'s Archie comics or my new BlackBerry, or the teenage vampire novels that [xxxxx] actually is reading. So it is on its way back to you. You and [xxxxx] can have a longer discussion about its merits and defects, but as the messenger (and the person in the family with access to a mailroom) it has fallen on me to do the deed. I hope you guys are having a lovely fall.... --best, Mike" Sheesh! Abridged version of my reply: "[xxxxx] will never know how she missed out on a real masterpiece. Oh well, you can lead a horse to water ...." |

:baji we do our best to help make the world a better place, star-ji. we do our best. and you never know; Grandma Moses didn't take up painting until she was in her 70s, but then did she ever paint. maybe it will be the same with your Dunnett friend and the writings of CJC... |

Perhaps your :cherryh: recommendation would have more credibility if you would read her Dunnett first? [hint hint nudge nudge] :poke: |

A fair point. I duly read The Game of Kings at her recommendation. I enjoyed it and discussed the book with her. Apparently, that did not lend my suggestion sufficient credibility. :lightsabre |

good for you! Game of Kings is a noble start. Francis is to Nicholas as Bren is to Ari, I would venture. I offer this comparison for your benefit, Star-ji. And, Francis himself matures in his own series. GofK was her first book, hard to believe though that might be, and she never looked back and her books only got better and better and better. I know this is sacrilege, but she is BETTER than :cherryh: . She is, in fact, the best. |

YES! Dunnett is the best at historical romance. May she rest in peace. BuJold is wonderful. :cherryh: is equaly good in depth of thought but wider in her veriety of worlds and points of view. It's all good. |

The GofK was extremely well done and I was confident that I was in good hands. I read the first hundred pages or so of Niccolo Rising at your suggestion, before I was interupted by an approaching Babbling Books deadline. It was masterful. I plan to return to it when possible. I do not doubt your claim, Koki-ji, though she lacks the desirable attribute of writing in the SF genre. Still, I do love historical fiction, though it is not quite the passion for me that SF is. It is exciting to know that a great pleasure awaits me whenever I choose to reach for it.
I have confidence in Dunnett and :cherryh: , and I am encouraged by your feeling for Bujold, Aelith-ji. I only read one Bujold, Paladin of Souls. Unfortunately I found it to be histrionic and overwrought. Despite this, I could admire the writing, but based on that one book wouldn't think of her for installation into the Pantheon of the Great. I would like very much to have underestimated her, and The Vor Game is high on my To Read list. Perhaps that will prove illuminating. |
