Just a niggling thought. Could she use Firefox? Or is the problem that now that she has installed IE7, it's integrated into her operating system too deeply for the use of another browser?

I *just* got back from having dinner & watching Disney's "Moulan" with Herself :cherryh: & Her Janeness.

The latest:

Herself spent several hours on the phone today w/ tech support. "Half of the problem is solved": Herself had never, ever cleared Her caches. Herself didn't even know to. Clearing caches solved part of the difficulties; history memory was simply full & that is why previously used URLs quit changing color. The tech support guy admited the number of caches Herself cleared today under his direction was "epic".

Front Page is still an issue. Herself will be phoning tomorrow to try to sort it out; it may be a server problem. In the interim, Herself conveys this message to "anyone who can help clear up the mess": She would like your help if you are familiar with Front Page. If you are, please PM or email me & I'll help you get in touch w/ Herself.

In the interim, Herself announces She is "mute until Front Page is fixed". I passed on your suggestions of Live Journal, etc. While Herself seems interested, it sounds like She is trying to fix Front Page...that is, if She doesn't File Intent on Bill Gates first. :shoot:

(edited to add that this was supposed to post before Sk8ters) ... hope :cherryh: can figure that out. I do know how frustrating that all can be.

(nods to Aja Jin) If only there was an easy an answer to updating an entire website. I haven't nearly as much stuff on my own, and keeping it up is quite a chore! And I'm not writing two novels a year ...

I'm assuming she doesn't have Vista. I hope not.

If :cherryh: is still dead in the water, there are a few things with IE 7 that she might try, yet (and the suggestion of trying Firefox was a good one, also).

Clearing the cache probably helped, but she may also have to reset some security settings in IE 7. She should have someone at 'tech support' walk her through this, someone that can run IE 7 concurrently, but this is the gist:

Under the 'Tools' menu (don't use IE7 much, but I think it's the little icon on the toolbar that looks like a gear) there is an item at the bottom that says 'Options' or 'Internet Options'; she should go into the tabs labeled 'General', 'Security', 'Privacy' and 'Advanced'; the latter three have buttons that will reset her various security settings back to factory, and the first one has the 'Delete Files' and 'Clear History' buttons.

These settings can be modified in a number of (mysterious) ways, including stupid updates from Micro$oft apparently; her problems seem to coincide with a batch of updates rolled out in Sept.; I've had some recent customers in the shop (and house calls) with similar but not identical fun.

I've steered away from Front Page, so I don't know much about it, but if FP is using the 'default browser' for something (rendering pages or updating the site) then security updates to IE7 may very well have caused the problem. Did she upgrade to IE7 recently, or did this just start happening spontaneously?

And did 'tech support' talk her through doing a system settings backup using 'System Restore'? I'm sure she has a data backup scheme of some kind, but sometimes the former doesn't get done; and sometimes a 'Restore' can undo the types of problems she seems to be having...

Wyrdchao:

Don't know much about Front Page. I've never tried to design or set up a web page, though I knew some basic html coding awhile back for proofreading purposes.

But like you said, I noticed some IE7 security updates a couple of weeks ago. And security settings can drive one crazy if they're set too high.

Does anyone know enough about Front Page to assess the switch in browsers? You would think it would support Firefox (Its distant ancestor was Netscape--now an open source program). I would think that the Goddess should have it installed as her default browser anyway, unless it won't work with Front page, etc., which I doubt.

My fear is that Microsoft programs can interfere with all sorts of other programs in ways one would never suspect. I remember once a lost half a week to Outlook .... but a lot of people have similar stories.

Which is why I avoid IE for everything but MS security downloads, and never use Outlook Express at all.

Also, a lot of malware/viruses etc. are designed for IE. Firefox cuts down on their transmission. Maybe 10 percent of the world's browsers in use are now Firefox, which is a free download. At least use it as a default browser and IE only for emergencies. Nobody I know uses IE anymore, certainly not IT people, starting with my son who works maintaining the computers at a TV post-production house

Also, clean out some of the malware out of the system with malware cleaners (like Ad Aware, but there are others) plus clean out histories, etc., reguolarly. I still accumulate a lot of crap on my system.

None of which may help the Goddess, however.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions: they have all been forwarded on (including Vetch's hysterically succinct observation). I just phoned to make sure She checked Her email for them today.

She thinks that when She fixed the IE7 problem, that She inadvertantly deleted some code critical to opening Front Page, because when She tries to log onto Front Page, a message that the server can't be accessed pops up. Today, She is phoning Front Page, having gone through the Best & Brightest at Micro$oft tech support.

Herself wanted me to pass along that She is continuing to update her Progress Report, even though it can't be posted for now. One assumes the eventual download will be epic. Stay tuned.

Epic indeed:

My profoundest sympathies: I remember spending hours for days working--for just one example--into the wee hours for days on end trying to fix the then infamous "Windows 98 shutdown problem." In the process of having to turn off the computer by pulling the plug--for weeks--I irretrievably corrupted one of my hard drives. The first several MS fixes/patches made the problem WORSE.

In other words, we all know how infinitely time consuming these problems can be. for her sake, I'm glad the book is off.

Dear Lord... (Feathered gods!!)

If one was not in the process of interviewing for a position as one of Darth Vader's personal lackeys ... (IT position with a well known and hated parking authority).

I would love to come down and fix the problems herself is facing... and perhaps move CJ to a more applicable application than Front Page ... or at least find a better interface for her much missed musings... (oooh ... alliteration).

I'm sure things will work themselves out. Additionally I feel that CJ would feel more comfortable controlling her own blog/journal information as opposed to posting on blogspace or another companies domain (where some nasty legal type could claim rights to the information) ... could be wrong ... but doubt it.

LL&H (and greatest sympathy)

If one knows how to code (or has a good cheat sheet at hand) one can write an HTML document in wordpad. Even easier- open an earlier file, delete the text to be displayed, type in new text. Save as a different name. It will load with all the background etc. of the source file, just different text.

That is if you're feeling masocistic and patient and know where to send the completed document.

Hey -- I was talking to my cousin about this and she reminded me about "Nvu" (Pronounced "New View"). It's an Open Source (Public Domain - Free) Html Editor designed to "rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver". Jatina likes it quite a lot, and I tried it out this morning, and I think it could possibly replace either.

It works a bit differently, and that will be a bit frustrating at first. The layout and logic are not the same -- but it does basically all the same things. And once you get used the differences, it works well.

I know The :cherryh: Goddess wants to fix Front Page -- but iNvu is free to download and use. Perhaps if things continue to be frustrating on that end, she might give it a try.

It can be found here:

I'm making a complete left turn in this thread. I just wanted to express somewhere (and this seemed a good place to do so - maybe it's just Monday) how much I enjoy reading :cherryh: 's progress report. Many of my dreams revolve around thoughts of becoming a painter or a writer, but it just seems like an impossibly alien life to achieve. When I read the progress report, I get the feeling that it's not that alien a life after all and therefore possible for me to achieve someday. I find that both comforting and encouraging.

And of course, I adore the window into the life of one of my favorite writers. I deeply appreciate that the progress report exists.

Peace,
Suzdal

I miss reading the updates. I like hearing how and what Nand' :cherryh: is doing.

It's like a close friend has moved away or is too busy to chat with me.
