IMO, the recognition and offer from Herself is sufficent.

Oh, yes! It's lovely -- and herself does 'link' to Shejidan by mentioning it in her blog. I think that is very much.

My brother-in-law is a fairly recent Cherryh convert, via my good offices () and my library over the last year.

Then said brother-in-law is not an official member of the Raging Hordes, Surtac?

I'm with the majority. I found the board through herself's blog. The extra step of actively looking for it (not that difficult) hopefully keeps at least some of the casual troglodites out.

She also supports Shejidan by recommending us directly in the books. That's how I found you and how I knew to keep reading the rest of the series.

Consider also that this site is primarily dedicated to just one of her universes. Does :cherryh: not have a small section where she lists all her fan sites? That would be more appropriate than being on the front page.

Like Resa, I enjoy the exceptional level of intelligence, creativity, and civility found here and hope we stay open to new talent.

I don't want to sound elitist, but . . . I find some of my most interesting discussions here with people that I can open up to. I like the civility we've maintained. I think the mention is sufficient.

Hmmm baji-naji, there is no way to know what would happen if we go -that- public. If we stay the way we are now, with people finding this place all by themselves -just the way I did when looking for *cough* Foreigner slash fanfic- we'll have better chances to mantain harmony and civility but we'll remain somewhat secluded. One thinks it's also very important that we do our best to protect Cherryh-daja's privacy. After all she is kind enough to simply nod benevolently at our ravings. We are the nicest kind of stalker anyone could posibly wish for but gods' know what sorts we could find out there. Would we be able to keep them under control? Would they ruin our fun -or- make things more lively here? So this is the dilemma, nandiin, discreet or public?

I believe the consensus so far is to remain in the shadows and inconspicuous as a good assassin is wont to do... That is my desire. I'd hate to have to leave just because the board had been hi-jacked by a bunch of flamers.

No longer, Star-ji. He has been far enough away from the influence for long enough to have developed a modicum of sense and taste. :atwink

I believe Herself's going so far as to mention the existence of this site and community is quite sufficient. An invasion of flame-spewing troglodytes is a concern well worth having. I enjoy this place -- even if I'm basically a, shall we say, semi-lurker -- and the ambience is no small part of that. If it takes someone a bit more effort than a simple click on a link to find Shejidan, perhaps that is a bit of a filter. All to the good.

In my experience the difference between a troll-intense flameboard and a civilised discussion group is the following -

> The general tone of the board. If everyone is polite the behaviour spreads. This is to say role models are important.

> A set of rules.

> A group of members actively policing.

> A shared interest in the topic/s.

The actual number of members have nothing to do with what happens. So being scared of flamewars suddenly taking over Shejidan is moot.

That said I'm still pro 'secrecy', for other reasons. Do we want to be officially linked to CJC? A matter of integrity, for both parts...

I'm with Aelith "Does not have a small section where she lists all her fan sites? That would be more appropriate than being on the front page.
"

I don't think the front page is appropriate - it is after :cherryh: 's page, but a mention on a contact page or such would be more reasonable. After all as we know :cherryh: very reasonably devotes more time to writing than answering fan mail, and a new fan looking for more information is likely to find it here.

Also I think it reasonable that we are a CJC recognised (ie linked to) fanbase rather than a bunch of obscure stalkers obscessing over :cherryh: latest releases in secret.

Note - Shejiden is specifically linked to from :cherryh: LT author page, and with discretion mentioned there also ,our Busi-ji was informed of its location on LT (by me) so it's hardly secret.

...yes, and I recently invited another LT friend as well (she's thinking about it).
So no, it's hardly a secret. And generally speaking people do come and go as life changes so it's good to have an influx of new members.

I'm in favour of keeping the status quo. I don't know whether linking to :cherryh: 's site would endanger her privacy or Jane's, but I don't see any need to test that question. I am by no means an expert in things web-related - quite the opposite - and I had no difficulty finding this board. We aren't hiding, :cherryh: does mention this board from time to time in a very positive way (which is a wonderful "endorsement" in itself), and I don't think it hurts anyone to "earn" the pleasures found here by having to do a minimal bit of searching.

I'm voting with the majority to stay in the shadows.

I'll be the first to admit that the only reason I found Shejidan was because of the mention on Herself's blog. On the other hand, I wasn't actively looking for a site like this, either.

That said, like many others before have pointed out, one of the very important charms of Shejidan is its smallness and politeness. I belong to two politically inclined discussion boards, one huge and one small like this. I am much less likely to post at the big site because a) several people have already made the point I would have made, and, b) my comments are usually lost in the vastness of other responses. On the smaller site, I and my opinions are very well known, and my postings are usually responded to.(No, I am not a large frog in a small pond there; I'm much more of a lower medium frog. But the group of us is small enough that even us lower medium frogs are able to actively participate in the discussion.)
