Galleys are also chopped up into pages, stuffed between two flimsy covers and distributed to booksellers by publishers trying to generate "buzz" for the book in question. Booksellers are encouraged to share these galleys with their staff. Since I have no staff, most of mine go home to Himself and my mother-in-law.

One of my reps has taken to supplying me with galleys or ARCs (Advanced Reading Copies) of F. Paul Wilson's books. Himself, my oldest son and my youngest son are big, big fans of Repairman Jack, so it's really fun to toss the ARC into the air and watch the blood fly!

Since both are being published by DAW, does this mean that Cyteen II Regeneration will arrive first and then we will have to wait a looonngg time for Conspirator???? One is anguished at the very thought!

Having been introduced to Repairman Jack, I could understand the Family Frenzy you note. Must be quite the sight!

When did Cyteen II get sent off to Penguin?

As I'm sure Herself :cherryh: has mentioned on her blog, it's about eight months between the time the manuscript is accepted through the front door and printed volumes are rushed out the back door of the publishing house.

Felicitous Sk8er mentioned that :cherryh: has not yet seen the galleys (in this case, the sheets and sheets of text.) Having spoken with many an author, the SOP appears to be: The galleys arrive at the absolute worst possible time (You're writing like a maniac to meet another publisher's deadline or you're really, really going great guns on your next novel, not to mention which your mother is sick, your cat is sick, Christmas is two days away and you forgot your significant other's birthday last week.) The galleys are accompanied by a note saying that all changes and corrections are due within forty-eight hours. Author then spends the next thirty-six hours crawling around on the floor reading and correcting these huge sheets of text. Red-eyed and feeling like forty miles of bad road, author then packages up the galleys, nearly gets killed running the package to FedEx, pays through the nose for next-day delivery, goes home and crashes. If the author is very, very lucky :baji , when the book is actually published, his/her corrections will have been made.

Given that the Goddess :cherryh: is a proven money-maker, I would not expect an overly long lag between Cyteen II and Conspirator. (Of course, since we are speaking of the publishing industry and Penguin in particular, I could be very, very wrong, too.) :hissy

Perhaps we should begin collecting a fund toward chocolate and coffee beans for the Goddess now, to help?

:baji Star-ji, I want BOTH to arrive as soon as possible. I read Deliverer in about 1.5 days and immediately panicked because I knew it would be a long, long time before the next Bren book! I NEED to satisfy my Bren addiction and I WANT to have a perfectly lovely and satisfying time with Regeneration. I have a sizable cache of gift cards to the Barnes & Noble and Borders bookstores (I have trained my family well) and will pounce on both books as soon as they arrive. :chomp

Then I am really surprised that it isn't on the summer list. Do you happen to know what Penguin was talking about when they told me the only future publication by :cherryh: was a story collection in October? I'm wondering if the upcoming release was described incorrectly.

There was an unanticipated delay with II (nothing related to Herself or the manuscript). Nothing bad -- just a simple delay.

This often happens with publishers for Publisher Reasons. I run into it a lot. It just is what is. Larger publishers are much like dusei that way, with incomprehensible ways, and it takes some time and painful gradual exposure to gain a measure of immunity to their toxins. At the same time, no kel'en or kel'e'en is quite complete without his or her dus. Plus, like dusei, publishers aren't very intelligent but have a certain odd psychic sense that causes them to pick up bits of info you didn't give them. And some dusei will prefer a tsi'mri, for no apparent reason.

One wonders if nand' Sk8er herself helps proof these galleys every once in a while, or if :cherryh:-aiji herself and Jane must needs muscle the recalcitrant papers into submission on their own.

Oh to be a fly on the wall for the galley-proofing session of Conspirator! One has always wondered how the galley-proofing process is done, and so many thanks to Chanor-ji for clearing that up with that insight into How The Publishing Process Really Works (No Matter How Insane It Looks). Would that I could contribute to the Coffee&Chocolates Fund, but one is underage, a student, and PayPal has banned users from my country due to the excessively high prevalence of credit card frauds emanating from here. *sulks*

I wish I lived near Cherryh-aiji--One would gladly volunteer one's eyes, sleep time, eating time, free time and reading speed to the effort, as one proofs fan stories pretty regularly as it is. What's a thousand pages of galley copy with actual decent printing, spelling and grammar and a good plot, compared to some of the horrors I've seen coming from adolescent writers with abysmal spelling and no idea of plot or pace, whose idea of a story runs along the lines of "he said; she said"? :atwink Proofing the galleys would be my job of choice any day, one thousand large pages notwithstanding. (:inlove: with the idea)

Nevermind Cyteen (blasphemy, I know!)--I'm with Jeimani-ji on this-- want a copy of Conspirator now (ASAP anyway)! *iz dying of new shiny Bren book deprivation*

Conspirator hasn't been submitted yet, so no galleys. The alpha read is in progress right now :noevil: . One suspects Herself will update her blog in the next several days with details. :innocent :baji

This year will be my twentieth year (number counters: felicitous or unfelicitous, please?) in the bookselling field. I have spoken with many authors, many other booksellers and even some publishers reps, and we all pretty much agree: The major publishing houses are not in business to publish books. Nobody's really sure what they are in business for (my theory is that they are in business to do lunch); but it is not to publish books.
