Yesterday, Carolyn told me there was a pre-Internet fangroup, Shon'ai. Communication was via print newsletters. :asei

I would like to find out more about this group, in order to include a brief summary in the Shejidan history I'm compiling. Does anyone know anything about Shon'ai, or someone who was a member? :baji

Would it surprise you if I told you I was a member of Shon'ai? I have several issues of the fanzine, my conreport in the the first Ribbons was originally published in Shon'ai.

Nadiin,
One just had a most interesting phone conversation with our own dear Bret!

Shon'ai published a quarterly "when possible" newsletter from 1981 - January 1996. It is significant to me that 1996 was about the time the Internet was really taking off. Shejidan was founded by CKTC in October 1999.

As a result of my chat with Bret, one has emailed an editor of Shon'ai's newsletter, Sandra M. (full name not posted in order to deter :spamman: ) One is hoping not only for more information about the group, but also to inquire about preservation of the quarterlies. They must surely be treasures!

Sandra M. has preserved every single issue of Shon'ai. Good woman!

Our own Dear Bret-ji & the Messenger's Guild surprised me this evening: a parcel containing his carefully preserved issues of Shon'ai, as a loan. They are a treasure! Absolutely fascinating! After perusal, I'll post what I learned before returning them to Bret. :t

Cool, seriously cool!

Perhaps Sandra could be persuaded to scan her archive into a web-centric form, say a downloadable pdf file? I would be most intrigued to see such early material.

Wai! That's so cool!

This predates me by several years, so I'd like to see them too. :)

Every Shon'ai issue contains an explicit prohibition against reproduction, except with the *written* consent of CJC :cherryh: & the editor (for some years, Sandra M). I have contact with both, but this is why I do not wish to ask:

While I too would very much love to see Shon'ai preserved on the web for all to enjoy, Jane explained that members considered Shon'ai "private" and for their own amusement. Thus, they may have contributed articles & art they wished to not be disseminated to others who weren't their "friends" outside the group. However, I can't believe that a description of Shon'ai: origins, evolution, issue contents, etc. would violate either express prohibition, or implied trust.

Shejidan is a different case. We all understand that the Internet is incredibly public (even though it seems incredibly private) -- and that our posts can be seen (& coped) by anyone. Those same posts may well be preserved indefinately. See the Wayback Machine for a great example.

The most imortant things to me were:

1) That the existence & history of such a group be documented & known. Now it is, on Shejidan (will need to check out Wikipedia, though!)

2) Issues were preserved -- & they obviously have been, lovingly.

3) That it be known who has archived copies, in case the need ever arises. And now we know of at least 2 people, if not 3 or more.

CJ sent me a few [then current] issues of it when I first corresponded with her in Sep 1993 or so.

I never got around to doing anything with it, but I have a couple, where the editor explains she got into CJ via Morgaine [who didn't, back then:) ].

I must dig them out, after I finish Deliverer. Not long now! :)

"Very nice people" said CJ.

kkkkkttt!
