Nadiin,
Unsure if this is appropriate; but what about a housewarming gift? Perhaps a new message bowl for the foyer?

Herself and Jane are always very pleased and touched when their readers remember them. For a housewarming gift, why not simply message cylinders, including flat ones (cards)? Ogre-i-B-ji, we've done this before, for Her and Jane's respective birthdays & it made it a huge hit:

Her Incredibly Auspicious Occasion is drawing ever closer

Her Most Auspicious Occasion is Looming on the Horizon

If anyone wishes to do this, and needs my snail mail address, please PM me & I'll send it to you.

By the way, I asked last night: Carolyn hasn't been writing at all during this move. :knife: No time. But -- the computers are now set up in the new place. The professional movers finished emptying the 2 storage garages yesterday, and now the basement is jammed head-high in boxes. Many items haven't been seen since the move to Spokane in 2000.

Today's agenda: empty the apt. of the last few items. Finish cleaning it, and a final walk-through. Turn in the keys. Collapse (except I don't have time for this little luxury as I'm leaving for Adult Nationals in 7 days & :w: The Heat Is On.)

A wine-cheese-&-sorting party is planned for the future, to consolidate items & lower the height of the box pile. A mega-garage sale is also in the works.

Perhaps we could arrange an auction here on Shejidan of a few things that might please the discriminating fan?

The library will be culled, and one is certain that many tomes will be of great interest to Shejidan residents. I'll see what we can do about diverting selected volumes to :salad: :salad: :salad: . I'm willing to ship them, as long as the recipient covers the packaging & postage. Please do *not* expect any of Herself's books. *Do* expect a diverse range of other authors & topics.

And maybe there will be additional artifacts that will be of interest, besides books? :baji

As of this afternoon, they are *out* of the apt and all 4 storage garages. :bunny7:

Jane & I finished emptying the last items from the old pantry & refrigerator. Carolyn had maintained that so few things remained that they would fill only 1/2 of a car. Ha! Both Jane's & my vehicles were crammed to the brim. We decided Carolyn is spatially impaired from dealing with jump and light years.

Adventures in plumbing: re-installing the fish tank. :fish
Carolyn spent yesterday filtering 32 gallons of water and titrating it to the correct salinity. All this work was for naught when a cleaning sponge fell from the shelf above this morning, ruining the entire barrel of 'clean' water.

So, Herself started over. What I didn't know: the filtering pump depended on the room light being turned on to power the pump. Whenever I found the lights on, I turned them off to save electricity. Herself would discover the pump off, then turn the lights back on. This went on for several hours until Herself finally figured out what was going on. Once the culprit was identified , progress was finally made.

As of tonight, all tubing & pumps are hooked up, after so many trips to the hardware store for asundry fittings that Carolyn swears the clerks cringe whenever they see her. We made 2 trips in 2 hours alone this afternoon -- but the job is finally finished. We hope. :baji

The final test of our plumbing prowess will occur at ~10:00 am tomorrow when water is pumped upstairs through the hoses for the first time. An observer will be stationed upstairs to monitor the hoses -- and if connections rupture, to scream, "Thar she blows!!"

Congradulations on the new home!! I'm doing renos myself so I feel your pain about the painting. Some things just look real different on the wall. It is very good that you can help out.

Having stuff in boxes for a long time makes it feel like a birthday or something when you rediscover things.

"oh! I remember this!" will soon echo through the house.

Nadiin,

One regrets to inform you, that to the best of Carolyn's knowledge, only 1 tiny crab survived the 4 days out of the tank. :poke: The "live rock", alas, is no longer "live". :knife: The corals & fish are boarding at the fish store, and :baji , are safe.

Let us bow our heads in remembrance of Sam, Ernie, and Bert. Slime now, but not forgotten.

This sorry turn of events has brought a tear to the eye of Carolyn. :bawl There has been much gnashing of teeth and renting of garments.

Please contact me if you wish to send a condolence message cylinder.

This moving business I was totally unaware of all this time sounds horribly, horribly like my life, minus the lost pets! I have been in 'moving mode' since 27 Feb, and did the actual main furniture move on 10 Mar. I am still finishing off the sorting and stuff. For about the next month or three.

It is all terribly familiar, especially the storage garage stuff [I staged a lot of my 17 vanloads to Dad's garage next to my new unit next to his, so every box got moved about three times...] AND the whole farceical 'last day'... 'last load' 'last box' thing. I had about eight of those!! There's ALWAYS something left over, another box, another trinket, another something or other....sod it! I boxed and moved everything myself, Dad just drove the van [60 kloms of back and forth the 1.7km between us..], and unboxed it all as well. Remind me not to do that ever again, even it if is efficient and no-one else drops anything or gets in your way!

Still, nothing got broken in the move, amazing; given how everything was boxed for a 1700metre journey [ie not to be utterly unbreakable] and the only thing I can't find is one Gromit standup card cutout - and I KNOW I moved it, it just fell down off a cabinet in a breeze after I moved in and is lying behind, covered over, or otherwise obscured by something. Or accidentally recycled with some cardboard :(
But I definitely did have it here at the new place.

And, yes, there were many lovely discoveries and things being released from long storage. Putting books on shelves and models and miniatures is the only fun thing from the whole experience, even if you have nothing else to do.

And I had stage-managing Harmony Day, Work for the Dole, job applications and work to do was well. :o

PS desperately sad to hear of yet another mass shooting in America.
I actually have a friend who works at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, they also lived near the Washington Sniper, my aunt and uncle live in Littleton Colo, their next door neighbour's daughter was killed at Columbine...and its only a few days till the 11th anniversary of our Pt Arthur massacre here in Tasmania.

Yes, this is most sad - i'm actually not sure quite how to react, other than in shock. The radio has been on this topic all day. I recall a trip to the US a couple months after Columbine - the meeting was in a hotel in the Denver Tech Centre area; only a mile or so from Columbine High in Littleton. And i was in the US again when the Washington sniper was caught - my friend Margaret had been in DC for a few days visiting some other friends before joining me in Colorado the day before the sniper was caught. I was most relieved.

My sympathy and condolences to all who have suffered as a result of this latest combined tragedy.

A horrible tragedy. The US is clearly the world champion of school shootings. I'm sure there are disturbed homicidal people everywhere, but they appear to be better armed here. It is awful.

I still haven't recovered from the murders of the little girls in the Amish school house last year - these horrible things just keep happening here.
I'll be watching the presidential candidates for their positions on gun control. The only creature that is hunted with the kind of gun used in these atrocities is human, isn't that right?
If any one is interested, the Brady Campaign for gun control says they have an anonymous donor who will match funds contributed this year up to $500,000.

From Herself's blog, 10 May 2007:

...Then Sharon dropped over yesterday evening, and brought us some housewarming gifts and cards from various people at Shejidan: bless you, dear readers, you didn't have to do that. You're very, very generous, and rest assured, the items will find places of honor in the new abode—very felicitous places, indeed, adding to the kabiu of the house, and we thank you extremely for such thoughtfulness.
