Well,

Eldest has just surprised me by saying she read The Pride of Chanur some weeks ago. Apparently she didn't understand all of the politics but enjoyed the story overall.

She has just headed to bed (almost 10pm here) with a copy of Foreigner and is under instruction to question me if she has queries.

We'll see what happens, eh?

I read The Pride at about 16, I think, and then read and reread that series several times before 20. (as a series, I like it better than Foreigner. however, I have come to love the characters of each equally, in their own way.) I think it is a very good pick but alas! if she is missing the politics (and most would, at that age) then she is missing most of the good stuff. I hope she revisits it, and Foreigner, again later.

still, a good start over all.

My first Cherryh novel was "Hunter of Worlds", lo these many years ago. I read it at 15 (maybe 16). I loved it very much and reread it periodically. I think I read "Hestia" not too long after and enjoyed it, but didn't necessarily love it as much. I haven't reread it very often. "Wave without a Shore" remains a personal favorite. So, I guess I'd recommend either of those two ("Hunter" or "Wave") and then throw in "Port Eternity" to make a felicitous three. I love that book. I still find them appealing today and remain glad that they form part of the surround in which I live.

Peace,
Suzdal

My 16-year old-daughter is currently enjoying "Dragon in the Stars" by Jeffrrey A Carver. Told me yesterday that she wants to read the next one in the series ("Dragon Rigger").
