I personally don't like the A/U books (except for Chanur), but maybe Finity's End would also be a possible candidate.
I'd tip her more to Rusalka than Morgaine, although Rusalka has some horror qualities.
Stir her clear of Cyteen, but Chanur is possibility, the first book isn't too long and can stand alone.
13 1/2 is just shy of the age I started reading Foreigner (because I hadn't found it any earlier). You could start her of with Invader, Foreigner can be a bit slow indeed, but Invader is very interesting, doesn't have too many of Bren's iner struggles and you don't lose too much information from not having read foreigner. Invader could get her hooked for the other books, but is enjoyable on its own.

If you can, maybe some of the short stories are a possibility to ease a novice into Cherryh (not Scapegoat, that's for sure, but there are many more, the Sunfall stories, for example, or Visible Light).

Talk to her about the different books, what they are about and ask her what she wants to read.

I would go with the suggestion of Chanur. It gives an interesting perspective and would be more suited to a young lady than perhaps Fortress or Rider might be

The Chanur series was the very first of the :cherryh: books I read. And I was about 13/14 when I found them. If Eldest Daughter loves :kitty: then she ought to enjoy Chanur.

I liked Dreaming tree but wouldn't recommened it as an entry point for young CJC readers. I agree with the above comments on Foreigner - and does she have the patience to read 9 books of the same series?

One needn't go the distance. I stopped after the first three; there's closure enough that I didn't feel compelled to press on into Precursor.

Thanks people.

Some solid comments and suggestions there.

At this stage, I'm thinking I'll offer her a choice of three titles and let her make the decision after describing them all to her.

Right now, I'm inclined to suggest The Pride Of Chanur, Rider At The Gate, and Rusalka.

If anyone wants to open a book on this, I'd be betting on the animal factor and pick one of the first two. This is a child who has been horseriding weekly for six years now, and one who bought a large Bengal tiger poster for her bedroom a while back. And we are a three cat household, after all. :kitty:

Let the betting commence. Come in, spinner!

But on the other hand, she has also been reading many YA books about Eastern cultures (young girls growing up in rural China or Turkey, a biography of Japan's Princess Masaki and so on), so Foreigner might appeal also because of its feudal Japan similarities.

No-one has mentioned Paladin Feudal Japan, wasn't it?

I think you had the best thought: line up a bunch of the titles & let the girl make up her own mind. That also goes for reading Foreigner: she either understands it or not, likes it or not (with/out the understanding, may not bother her at all).
Nothing like starting up the independant decision making ability for herself. Sounds like she'd ask questions if she developes some: all to the good.

I love Paladin myself, but some of the sexual conduct might be a bit advanced for her. I'd wait on that till she's 16, not 13. speaking as an overprotective mother, of course.

Hm - a while since I read Paladin. Of course, that lets out Tripoint and Rimrunners too.

Oops!

 I guess this means I have no lascivious reading in store when I tackle the Chanur books.

Dont worry, Star-ji, there's plenty to entertain and engage in Chanur. They are my all time favorites.
