I considered that seriously. The problem is, I have a copy of Downbelow Station inscribed to "Herbert".
Indeed one of the worst sort!
My thinking exactly, Sk8er-ji! |

Herbert Marshall, or, alternatively, Marshall Herbert.... But you will have to stop aquiring :cherryh: works inscribed to others or things will quickly get out of hand. |

Cyteen II will be published by DAW, but when it will appear is a separate question. The galleys have yet to be received by Herself, and She has no idea when to expect them. :baji |

They must be moving quickly, however, if there is reason for javascript:emoticon(':cherryh:') smilie to expect galleys this soon after sending an MS in. The MS had to be edited (probably minor) and copy edited before going into galleys. This can be done very quickly in "emergencies," but this is a major book (high profit potential) for DAW. They would, hopefully, want to get things right. Since DAW can't make Christmas, it's February at the earliest, one would think. Maybe not even then; they have to look at the pub. schedules for the highest impact. Or, again, so one would think. |

That sounds pleasingly fast. I was prepared to have to wait until the end of 2008. |

Frankly, February was the earliest possible I could conceive that it would be POSSIBLE. Maybe it will be much later. I don't know. My assumptions about production velocity, especially involving electronic submissions, etc., is partly based on the speed with which Deliverer was published, which was a much shorter book. Partly because Herself is apparently awaiting galleys already (to my surprise), and also partly on my experiences in publishing, which were in magazines and a bit with newspapers. (Very different than book publishing). My only experience with book publishing is as an occasional reviewer. I just hope that all the time necessary is taken for the book to 1. Be as good as it can possibly be 2. Sell as many copies as it possibly can so that Herself will receive the rewards for achievement that she so deserves. |

Maybe I should have confidence, but do I hope the quality will be up to the level of that in Cyteen. Which is a very high standard. I am still curious what :cherryh:'s attitude is about writing a sequel to what is arguably the best book she has ever written. I would think this would come with a certain amount of pressure and expectation. |

I am very interested in her thoughts along these lines. Maybe she'll share them with us, if not now then at least ofter the sequel is published. In many repects it would have to be very different than Cyteen 1, whose underlying them was a working out of the nature vs. nurture issue. She doesn't like repeating herself. |

in July of 07, on my birthday in fact, I was in Spokane at ShejiCon I having a conversation with Jane Fancher. She was all excited about the work being done on Cyteen II. It seems that she and Ms. Cherry have a soft spot in their hearts for this story. Jane reminded me that she and Ms. Cherry had spent many long conversations on the phone discussing the wording and such of Cyteen I. Their respective phone bills were so large, in fact, that they decided to become roommates during this story as it would be cheaper for the two of them and it would get Ms. Cherry out of the heat and pollen of her former home. All I can say is that Jane was nearly giddy with excitement at the story that we're all about to read. |

A few general comments & personal opinions: food for thought. 1) Jane comments, & I absolutely agree with her assessment: Carolyn knows she is "good", but she doesn't know how good she really is. Those Associates who have met her will agree Carolyn is a very down to earth and unassuming person. (Neither is Herself falsely modest). 2) Carolyn worries about every single book she writes, as is common to all artists. She always questions and frets to some degree if a new book will 'work' or not. 3) She depends on Jane for vital feedback, as people can't work in a vacuum. 4) I believe everyone will agree that not every single book can be a masterpiece. Few people write even one, let alone mutiple stories that are critically acclaimed. Carolyn knows this as well as anyone. 5) Remember all the revisions that were done for Cyteen 1? The anecdote is buried somewhere in this forum: IIRC, the final manuscript was something like "Version K, Revision 23". (Maybe someone knows where this post is buried?) 6) That being said, Cyteen 1 was written in only 6 months. 7) I've known some galleys have been returned to Herself in as little as 1-2 months. But, I have reason to believe the turn-around for Cyteen 2's galleys will probably be longer. |

That is very encouraging! Sk8er, thank you for those thoughts. Reptile-ji and I are very curious though: Any thoughts on any special anticipation :cherryh: may have given that this is a sequel to not just any book, but to her finest work? |

An observation that seems to have a bearing on this thread: “The need to be a great artist makes it hard to be an artist. The need to produce a great work of art makes it hard to produce any art at all.” -- Julia Cameron |

Quite aprapos. But I'm afraid I can't get what would really satisfy my curiosity. Which is a direct response from :cherryh: , or a direct relaying of her thoughts on this topic. Perhaps one day... |

The December 2007 issue of Locus magazine reports " C.J. Cherryh delivered the sequel to Cyteen, tentatively titled Cyteen II: Regeneration, to Betsy Wollheim at DAW. The Forthcoming Books section shows DAW's schedule through September '08 but no mention of Cyteen. The paperback of Deliverer is listed for February and March has the omnibus Alliance Space (still nothing about the contents) |
