Dear Sk8ter, one did know :cherryh: could draw beautifully as well as write. But I think the creative urge in her that is comparable to that portrayed in Wave - and which I am speculating gave the portrayal of the artist's creative moment in Wave such authentic power - is the writing urge - every bit as compelling, and not unlike what the protagonist in Dhalgren experiences. |

Add me to the big, strong limb!!! :inlove: I only made it completely thru Cyteen the first time about 2 years ago, after much effort to get past the build-up, and I really, really, felicitious 3, REALLY want to see what happens. As I recall, Justin? was getting the life extension treatments when all H--- broke lose and that can not be interrupted or it goes wrong!!! :zimmer |

Kokipy, yes, exactly: Herself HAS to write. She can't NOT write. :cherryh: Cyteen 2 update: when I spoke to Herself last night, She reported writing has "slowed down"...because She is now "thinking". |

Interesting, Sk8er. I wonder, is She working to a target wordcount that She has in mind, or to a publisher-specified minimum or a market rule of thumb? I'm just curious about how these things work from a business (of writing) perspective? :invert I liked the pun on bollocks/bollixed btw. |

I got an email from Jane during Herself's & Jane's recent trip to Texas to visit Carolyn's mom. You may enjoy the following excerpt; I don't think Jane would mind my sharing it. Background: while writing Cyteen 1, Carolyn discovered Jane was an excellent editor, with wonderful insights -- and not afraid to offer an opinion or tell Carolyn that She was off-base. Every writer needs that, no matter how brilliant. Carolyn (in Oklahoma City) would phone Jane (in Seattle) & read various drafts of Cyteen. This went on for months. Finally, after an $800 phone bill one month (& this was 20+ years ago), Carolyn asked Jane if she would consider moving to Oklahoma City as Carolyn had the upstairs free in her house -- Jane could have that, & Carolyn would save $$$$$ on phone bills. Jane could also serve as Carolyn's business manager. (Carolyn's always needed office & computer help, also.) Jane happened to be between jobs, so took Carolyn up on her offer. The rest is history. :baji Jane writes:

I regret that I can't supply a complete audiobook to them for just this purpose. I've just finished fabricating a couple of pop filters out of bent wire hangers and sheer nylon booties, and am looking for a way to attach one to my headset mic so that I can resume recording without all those pesky plosives. |

Ha! Theta9 Great and probably just the facts. About book lengths, while the Goddess has more intuitive senses of this, she did once mentio that 120,00 - 130,000 words or so were typical for a novel. But her last couple of novels for Foreigner may have been somewhat shorter. I'm not sure but I believe that Downbelow Station must have been quite a bit longer. And of course Cyteen was originally published as three books, although conceptually it was a single novel. And it's way, way longer. Point is that I would suspect that telling a story takes on its own rhythms. A sequel to Cyteen may easily be 125,000, words long. Or it might be 200,000 words. Depends on the story arc. Also, I don't know exactly where the sequel picks up. Maybe 30 minutes after Cyteen 1 ends, maybe years later. Not that that is really relevant. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think Cyteen is one of the great science fiction novels--beyond "merely" winning a Hugo, etc. I hope that the Goddess feels enough absence of stress to do whatever she feels necessary to make this novel the best she can. And I have no idea if the rhythms of imagination are such that she is nearly finished. Yes, as a fan, a lust to read the sequel. Yesterday! But if to make the novel right and true to her vision (or whatever) she had to throw it out and start over [perish the thought!] then I would advise her to do so. Meaning, Goddess baby, do what you think's right! |

Surtac wonders:
Sorry to have missed your question, Surtac-ji. I believe the most accurate reply is "both". Herself always says, "A story is as long as a story needs to be". Even so, it's neccessary to shoot for a target. When Gate of Ivrel was published, the market was for 80,000 words. Now it is much longer: 130,000 words, if memory serves. From Herself's "Progress Report":
Betsy Wollheim commented during a NorWesCon (April 2006) panel that DAW needed to have special paper milled for a particular author's book. His novel was unusually long and couldn't be cut down. However, there were practical considerations for binding, etc. Hence, the special paper. :cherryh: Remember Pretender's original last chapter that was cut out during the beta read? The chapter that was going to start what eventually became Deliverer)? Guess what was never used....? BTW, you should see Carolyn's manuscripts. I was blown away: talk about totally professional. Herself's old manuscripts (complete with editing notations) are archived in a small college's library in the southwest USA. I can't recall the name of the college. There are a few loose manuscripts running around for various reasons: for example, I have the very first copy of Pretender as I did the alpha read. I believe Selina Rosen has a few original manuscripts also. |

I just checked Carolyn's "Progress Report" to see if she had updated it yet, since their Dallas trip. Yes -- it's posted as of tonight, with some commentary on how well Herself's writing is going. Going into Cyteen 2, She was doubting Herself, wondering if She could do it again. Judging from how extremely well Herself's writing has gone recently -- recently, She's experienced the best days of writing in the past 15 years -- I personally expect another masterpiece. :baji |
