A while back on the old board I wondered if the Cyteen sequel would directly involve Cyteen's characters, or be less closely connected. I don't regularly read Cherryh's blog but I found this hint tonight:

"12/05/06. Tuesday.
I had no trouble recalling Grant's alphabetic sequence, ALX, but could not for the life of me recall the 972. Grant, I will assure you, would have no trouble recalling it."

There have been several other hints, some public, some not so much:

1) The book opens with "a young Ari II reflecting upon her place in the world".
2) Re: the cause of Ari I's death: " 'They' will be discussing it."
3) Justin & Jordon are in the newest book.

I asked Carolyn tonight if Herself had been able to do *any* writing during this move. Answer: no.

Herself very much misses writing; it is very hard on her when She can't.

I do hope she can find the time to write soon.

I can't say I understand entirely, but I do feel something similar, I think, when it comes to drawing/painting. If I can't draw (personal drawings, not commissioned or work related stuff) for prolonged periods, I get really antsy and uncomfortable. I haven't done a personal piece in 2 months, and it's driving me batty.

Cyteen 2 is going extremely well! Below is an excerpt from Herself's blog. Note word count of 10,085.

5/19/07 Saturday. 10085. I had an absolutely great day. Sometimes the characters start telling you all they know, and this was the most fabulous day of writing I've had in 15 years. Jane and I are both saying this house is so good for us.....We didn't either one do the things we have on the list, but hey, a day like today is worth it....And we've settled in for an evening of tv; I've literally written myself into exhaustion, and can't wait to get at it tomorrow. That feels so good!

I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb by saying that nobody wants to read this book ASAFP more than I do.

This is so like Wave Without a Shore, and Dhalgren. the pressure artists feel to create, and the relief you feel when you've committed your art to a permanent medium.
I really want a discussion by the artists in this group of these two books! I was so struck in reading Wave Without A Shore by how much of the artist's own sense of creation is embedded in that book, and I was wondering if any of her other books involve artists creating to the same extent this one does. I am not an artist or a creator, only a consumer, so i need to hear from you all !

Kokipy-ji,

Several thoughts, not neccessarily related:

:cherryh: Many of you may already know that Herself is a gifted artist. For examples of Her work, please see Herself's website Art Gallery.

:cherryh: The entire Foreigner series started with a sketch of what was eventually revealed to herself as Banichi's hands. For the :salad: who still wants to see this portrait: it is still boxed up somewhere, but now with the new house, there is hope the sketch will once again see the light of day!

:cherryh: Don Maitz did the cover art for Alternate Realities. His painting for Wave without A Shore is spectacular. I love it! While IMHO the structure doesn't seem to completely match the vision Herself revealed via words -- Maitz' interpretation is still very evocative & I've spent prolonged periods of time gazing at it.

Back to Herself's blog & Cyteen 2. Note the rapidly escalating word count! If memory serves, a typical book averages 135,000+ words.

5/20/07 Sunday. 101302. I really should be doing the accounts. I hate doing the accounts, and the writing is flowing amazingly well---Justin and Grant are in fine form; so is Ari; and the heck with the accounts.... <SNIP>

5/21/07 Monday. 103281 ....And the writing is still going great...and no, I still haven't done the accounts. Life is good!

I don't think I am going too far out on a limb by saying you may be going too far out on a limb stePH. I really really really want to read this book. I say this at some peril, not knowing for sure what ASAFP means. But I think I get the gist.

My guess is it is a strong limb, big enough for many.
