My first thought was not a pub sign, but an army unit emblem, or bomber nose art. That made me wonder was Bomber nose art inspired by English pub signs, which often had mock-heroic or graphic art combining titles. And unlike unit emblems or ship's shields, was unofficial, and done by the flight crew or ground crew.
