I agree with you stePH. My youngest daughter got me to read Harry Potter, but she said I wouldn't like Twilight. I am determined to take her for her word.

You've read The Host then?

As I will probably never read Twilight nor its sequels, I wouldn't know. But even though it's so blatantly a "chick" book, I didn't feel I'd wasted my time reading it.

Interesting. Some of the biggest fans I've encountered--who were re-reading the series and had a clear favourite out of all the books--were teenaged males. Who didn't like to read.

In the August issue of Locus Magazine it seems as if every other book coming out is about Zombies, Vampires or werewolves, oh my. There is even an ad for Tom Sawyer Undead! I try to read all of the book reviews but I give up when I see Zombie or Vampire mentioned. They may be new symbols but ya know, sometimes a Spaceship is just a Spaceship. And I gotta have more Spaceship.

On a cheerier (Cherryher?) note Deceiver is #5 on last months Hardcover bestseller list and Conspirator is #10 on the paperback list. The review of Swords & Dark Magic (with a Cherryh short story) is called "an enormously intertaining book"

On a personal note I am mentioned in the Locus Survey Results under the Secondary Occupation section as "Our Little League Scorekeeper"

Does anyone else see the connection between America's fixation on angels and the current fascination with werewolves and vampires?

I have just begun mulling this over.

Can you explain your understanding of "America's fixation on angels", smartcat?

Maybe they fantasize about having a girlfriend who's a submissive doormat like Bella.

(I haven't read any of the books, but I did watch New Moon with my wife about a month ago.)

I quote enjoy the urban fantasy genre -- Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom books, Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson, Liz Williams' Detective Chen novels (not quite uf, but close), and of course the Dresden Files.

To use an example: Polls in the USA record a majority of people as believing in angels. In Europe the question is considered as not having enough importance to ask. baji-naji.gif

OOPS! Just finally noticed that I have been writing 'fixation' when I meant 'facination'. Apologies.

This describes not only belief, but that 55% of Americans report having been protected by a guardian angel.

Very depressing. Our local bigbox grocery/clothing/garden/whatever-else has 2 shelf sections designated 'scifi' but the number of other genre creeping in is very annoying. Almost half of the books are urban fantasy. I LIKE Dresden files for the snarky humor, but most of the vampire/werewolf stuff just gets in the way as far as I'm concerned. Lately the shelf stocker has been sticking what I'd call HISTORIC fiction in there as well, which is really out of line. I don't mind books about prehistoric Indian tribes, but they are certainly NOT science fiction! I've wondered if anyone would even notice if I snuck in and reshelved them somewhere else!
