I saw that a few weeks back. The photographer, based in Florida, had to be entirely prepared for this transit of the shuttle and the ISS across the face of the sun. The amazing thing was that he had a window of 0.54 second to take the picture -- the time it took for the transit.

It is worth looking at This account of the taking of the picture.

I didn't know you could see the auroras from space. I guess it makes sense when I think about it, but I thought it was something you needed the atmosphere to see...lol Pretty!

They take place in the atmosphere, but you can see them from above in space as well as from below on the ground.
